I went there because the bartender was smoking outside and solicited me to come inside. I was looking for food but was disappointed to see they only had lousy fried bar food. The only reason I stayed was because it was happy hour. After being served (at the bar) I was promptly ignored so that the bartender could bullsh*t with his fellow employee. I was out to celebrate that I got a job but the bartender could care less. I'm not the kind of person who needs to chat all about my personal life but have never been to a bar where the bartender was so utterly disinterested in his customers. I was not impressed, although I might go back just because the drinks were really strong and cheap during happy hour, otherwise, I will be sure to steer clear of this place.
Pros: Strong drinks
Cons: Sitting at the bar and still ignored

We recently brought some friends from out of town and fortunately the good service and vibes were still there. The bartender made some drink suggestions for each of us and it wasn't all about the money. The place got busy and even though we had to wait for service the people there really kept us in conversation and made it fun. My friends really liked this place.
Glad it lived up to all our hype.
Pros: grt atmosphr, bartnder & regulars r friendly, food tasty
Cons: never know if the bathroom is workin or not

I must tell you, I love this place. It's in my neighborhood and it's a pretty quiet place to have a cocktail and a conversation. THE PROBLEM IS ACTUALLY GETTING A COCKTAIL. I was joined at Thatch by some friends recently and we didn't get the cocktails we ordered nor did the semi-regular bartender make any attempt to rectify the situation. We were served the wrong drinks and basically told to deal with it. I was mortified.
The food has greatly improved and if they could get the service down. Thatch could be a great place. However, as of now, it's not even pleasant.
Pros: he doesn't work all the time
Cons: service is HORRIBLE

VERY, VERY rude bartender. (he looks a little like Roy Orbison- unfortunately for Roy) No reason to return and we have been at least a few times, hoping it will get better. Each time we were treated very rudely, drinks were watered down and not consistent and some were plain terrible. We were handed menus, then were never asked again if we would like to order food (the place was not busy). They force you to sit at the tiny tables even if they place is empty "just in case" a larger group comes in ... come on! It was mid week at 9pm, the place had about two tables filled and we were still asked to sit at a tiny table squeezed in between the other couples. I've never had a place treat customers so rude. It's a cool place, great idea and one of the only places to go in an area with not much else to offer ... this is the only reason people I know keep coming back. If they were in an area that customer service mattered the bartender's attitude might matter a lot more. I read the food was also re-heated in the microwave, now maybe it was a good thing the waiter didn't come back to take our order.
Pros: Good idea for a bar, it's the only thing in the neighborhood
Cons: Terrible service, whiny bartender, rude, drinks are not consistent

So, we went to Thatch for the first time last night and had a really great time! I can't remember the last time I laughed that hard. We had the crab rangoon that the cook told us she'd made just that night, and they were amazing. Real crab and folded perfectly and freshly made. We had a bigger group, so we ordered the volcano bowl. It came out on fire, and they when they poured the drink, they poured cinnamon over the top to make it quite a show. I think it's hard to make group drinks good, but this had terrific flavor. I see other people had problems with the staff, but I have to say we had good, fast service and everyone was really nice and fun.
My friend ordered the Pink Thing, which isn't a very tiki drink, but it was very well crafted and tasted great.
Pros: Great tasting drinks, terrific times and great staff
Cons: Small space overall and crowded,

Okay, right off I have to say that I had heard a lot of talk about Thatch, but never from anyone who had actually been.
Being that my husband and I are from Hawaii, and the fact that my husband absolutely loves tiki themed bars (always love the 'over-the-top-not-so-accurate' depiction of Hawaiian/Polynesian decor because hey it's fun to look at), I thought that I would give this bar a 'test run' with a friend before going with my husband-so I did.
So, 'test run' has been ran. It was a depressing waste of time and money. I had one of their "famous" Mai Tai's and then I had the drink that I believe is supposed to be their version of a Pina Colada, which was served to me in a plastic/resin cup, in the shape of a coconut, with most of the paint/color coming off (buy new cups!) - TWO OF THE WORST COCKTAILS I'VE EVER HAD! Both my friend and I thought that the drinks were watered down and tasteless. My friend had 4 drinks, three of which she straight-up would not drink because they were horrid (I tasted them and concur). I would also say that the drinks are NOT reasonably priced at all - expensive. Keep in mind that I do not object to high-priced cocktails- if they can satisfy my desire. I frequently pay upwards of $14 for one of my favorite cocktails elsewhere - but NOT here!
Now, onto the food. Also extremely lacking. The menu sounds appetizing, however once I was witnessing my food being prepared from a microwave, I changed my tune quickly - If you are going to microwave the food, at least do it behind a closed door. Not to mention that our appetizer was very tiny, but also at least twice what you would pay anywhere else (over $10) for spring rolls.
Lastly-the staff. I'm not sure I've received this degree of terrible service in Portland, anywhere, ever. There were two bartenders working and I still waited over 10 minutes after requesting my drinks, not to mention the fight it was to get served in the first place. They were rude, and simply did not care.
Pros: Tiki atmosphere done well - it's a cute, SMALL space
Cons: Go to Saucebox ->better drinks, food and service for same price!

So I'll start by saying that since the first time I went to this bar I loved it. I am a nerd for tiki / lounge style kitsch and Thatch does it well. Lounge music sets the tone for drinks in coconut cups and pu-pu platters. When sitting with friends at Thatch I begin to forget I am in Portland and drift off to some exotic Tiki Island.
I love Thatch so much that I couldn't wait to take my brother there on a recent visit from Alaska. I assumed like most people would that a Tiki BAR would be open standard bar hours. The sign outside the bar says they operate until "late". AND... it states on this very page that they stay open to 12am / 2am.
However, upon walking in for some drinks with my brother at 10pm we were casually told that they were "beat" after a "slammed" couple of hours and had already "put everything away" after deciding to close at 10PM! 10pm!! I was pretty outraged and upset. Here I had brought my brother on one of his very rare trips to one of my favorite spots only to be turned away because the bar staff was tired. No way to run a business (especially a BAR) in my opinion.
So in conclusion... the atmosphere is very enjoyable and I recommend checking it out... just be sure you catch the bar staff at a time that is convenient for them.
Pros: Awesome Tiki Atmosphere
Cons: Bar Closes Before Posted Hours and Without Good Reason

I was excited to hear about this place as it was being built. However, when I finally visited, I was kind of disappointed. The space itself is TINY. The "pond" you cross over as you enter, don't blink or you will completely miss it. Kudos to the owner for rescuing artifacts from historic tiki bars, but it's too bad they couldn't be presented in a little better environment.
Like the space, the appetizers we ordered arrived in tiny portions. They were very good, but the portions are about half the size of any similarly priced appetizer you'd order in a restaurant (so you're paying twice as much). The drinks were good, and strong, but also on the smaller size for the price.
I'd go back maybe if I happened to be in the area, but not worth venturing very far once you've already been there to experience the whole tiki thing.
Pros: Great atmosphere, authentic tiki decorations
Cons: Small space and small portions

I really can appreciate some forms of kitsch, but being a Hawaiian - sometimes I just get irritated with the whole TIKI thing. Okay, lesson of the day- the Hawaiian people basically had their land, culture and lifestyle stolen from them twice, once by the American government (did you kow they had their own established monarchy?), and second by Hollywood. And then things like tikis, black velvet and they word "pupu" become representative of an entire race. Irritating! But I suppose, it makes people money and this is a capitalist society. So, all that said, Thatch did a good job with this little bar. They took a theme and didn't make it too insulting. The decor is fun and very well done, and dare I say even a little classy. Service was pretty lame and the aloha spirit stopped short of the service workers shirts. The drinks and food though are not very big though. While I will not ever go back, I'm guessinf Portland hipsters and the tiki pub crawl will keep them in business. Overall, I wish them well and I hope they succeed.
Pros: Pupus
Cons: Poopoos

This is a fun place inside! We ordered the "Pu-Pu" appetizers and they were great! Previous reviews talk about how strong the drinks are and they are right! They only improvement they need is the help! When asked about beers, she let us know they were listed on the menu and walked away. Two groups of four walked in and were told the rooms in the back were reserved at 8:00 pm (it was around 6:00) so they would need to leave before then. Both groups left. The staff obviously has a fun time with each other, but seems to leave out the customers. Great food, but you better bring friends you like so you will have someone to talk with.
Pros: Great food, great drinks
Cons: Not terribly friendly staff
