No comparison, Dixie has it all and delightfully helpful staff to boot. This is the place to be for serious beaders or beginners. Also, a nice line of unusual gifts available here. Don't forget to check out her glass shop next door while you're at it. Give yourself a lot of time as you'll be in there a while looking.

This is a top-notch shop, with an amazing selection (sometimes they get low on Addi needles, though). I couldn't find some of the yarn I'm accustomed to using, but the staff is friendly and knowledgable and can help you find substitutes. The coffee shop is a great idea and really adds to the place. My favorite shop in Portland!

This is one of the most comprehensive scrapbooking stores I have visited in the Portland area - they seem to have everything that a scrapper could want! It can actually be a bit overwhelming if you don't know what you are looking for, but if you just want to browse or really know your stuff it's a great place to explore. I have never seen so many stickers in one place!
The staff is knowledgeable about the products and they were very patient with me, taking the time to explain the differences in the products I was unfamiliar with.
They offer a lot of different classes - I actually wish I lived closer so I could take advantge of this, because they are reasonably priced and they have lots to choose from.

Scrap...they sell just what the name implies...scraps of everything.
I've found leather and fine papers and beads and CD jewel cases. People give to scrap whatever they think someone could use in an art project and then scrap sells it at a minimal charge. It's much more exciting than Michaels because you never know what you'll find.
This is also THE best place to go when it gets near Halloween and you need a costume....costume supplies abound.
Occassionally for a minimal charge Scrap also offers craft classes.
The only problem I have with Scrap is a lack of time to spend as much time there as I'd like...and that's my schedule, not theirs!

When I think of artists...I think of starving artists...I think of artists in Paris struggling to get enough money for coffee let alone supplies for their craft so they dash out sketches on the table clothes...
In Portland, that doesn't have to happen. In Portland, we have I've Been Framed.
I've Been Framed is an art supply liquidator. Their suppliers watch bankruptcies and business closings nationwide for art supplies and bring them to Portland Artists at lower than wholesale prices.
Yes, they'll order at MSP if you ask, but they're just as likely to say "this is the same thing...and 75% cheaper!"
If you're a painter, they'll sell you a case of canvasses at cost...and still take the time to tell you about what brush works best on that brand of canvas.
Supplies for kids through the gallerie specialist...I've Been Framed is a great place to chew the fat wih other artists or quietly get what you need and go back to your studio...It's the Cheers without the booze.

More
Scrapbook Attack is my neighborhood scrapbook source. They have a huge selection of paper and embellishments and a super friendly staff. I know that many independently owned scrapbook stores are having a hard time competing with the huge craft stores that carry everything and Scrapbook Attack is one of them. Although I don't understand why, because Scrapbook Attack's prices are competitive and the quality is so much better, and the staff is so much more knowledgeable than other places that sell cake pans, terracotta pots and oil paint along with their scrapbook supplies.
As much as I love Scrapbook Attack, I do have several complaints. I became a "Varstiy Member" in December 2005 and for $15 a year, was able to get a store discount and attend one free crop night a month, plus several other sweet benefits. Although I didn't attend as many crops as I would have liked to, I had a blast and got a ton done when I did. Unfortunately, Scrapbook Attack has discontinued the Varsity Club. I know they will keep up the great deals through coupons and other things, but I really loved the free crops. Each crop costs $10, but if you spend $20 on product, then they waive the fee.
Also, I really do hate taking my kids in there and I get the feeling that the employees hate having my kids there too. There is a "pen" set up for the kids with some old toys in it, but it's small and my kids easily escape. Some stores I've been in have a much better set up to keep kids entertained. That would be nice if Scrapbook Attack had something like that but I realize there isn't much room.
I hope the huge craft stores don't drive our special, independently owned stores out of business. There is something to be said for a personal touch, and Scrapbook Attack certainly has that as well as an awesome selection of quality scrapbook supplies!

This huge store is an art lover's dream. It is a central location for supplies and classes and does a lot for the artist community in Portland. I especially like the light filled atmosphere and open spaces to browse through all they have to offer. Since it is such a large store, their prices are good and they often have sales.
