The most rapidly growing youth sport in the US is ....BOWLING! And not at those mega-sized, mutli-purpose national chains, but at places like Plano Super Bowl (PSB). PSB is home to the Plano Senior, Plano East, and Plano West bowling teams. Stop by any week night after 6pm and you'll find the place swamped with league bowlers of all ages. On Saturday morning, you can watch 3 leagues with children aging from about 5 to 21 competing for trophies or scholarship money.
So, why would they choose an old, smaller facility like PSB when there's a Mane Event nearby? I could paraphrase a former President and say, It's the lanes, stupid, which are meticulously maintained (unlike those big box guys), but it's also strong programs, reasonable prices, and great support staff.
Although it's old, the owners substantially updated the entire facility in 2007, including flat screen TV displays and updated computer scoring. The food is better than it has to be and reasonably priced. PSB is a non-smoking facility now and is open 24/7.
PSB has great summer programs for children - three lessons plus a bowling ball and bag for just about the retail cost of the ball, with a party in August.
Over the past several years, PSB has become something of a second home to my teen, even though other facilities are much closer. It just feels like family. The one-time bowler (check out weekday burger bowls) may not sense it, but stop by a few times or check out a league and you'll understand why places like PSB endure in the shadow of those other guys.

I had to unclog a sewer system once and had NO clue where to go to rent the stuff I needed. I called this place and they offered to deliver the stuff AND help me unclog at a very low price. Located right off the freeway, this is a really convienient place to go for all your power equipment and lawn needs. I will be forever grateful to them for the help they gave me when I needed to do the sewer unclog. Thanks again Plano Power Equipment.
PROS: Helpful

The Plano Aquatic Center is an excellent place to practice or stay in shape by swimming laps. They have lanes set aside for this type of swimming, and they have, in the past, offered lessons as well, so you can swim laps on your own or with a Plano Parks Department instructor. There are always lifeguards around when I've been and they have lockers that you can store your stuff in.

Jack Carter is a park that has been part of the City of Plano Parks and Recreation Department for a long time, and it's a family tradition. There's a park with picnic tables and walking and bike trails, as well as an incredibly nice swimming pool. The pool is actually more than one pool--there's one just for kids that's kind of a wading pool, then the regular pool. There's plenty of room to spread blankets and umbrellas and tables to sit at as well while others swim.

The Heritage Farmstead is a museum in Plano, TX that consists of an authentically restored fourteen room 1895 Victorian farmshouse complete with all of its original outbuildings. It's in the heart of Plano, and it has most of the original stuff--they'll show you a 19th century kitchen and tell you how things were made, preserved, etc. There's a nice gift shop and it's cheap--only $3.50 for adults and $2.50 admission for children and seniors. A great family place to visit!
