The first gossip I heard about Mad Mex was the giant, great margaritas they serve. Their monster margaritas with shots of alcohol in them are guaranteed to make you good for the night. I'm not a heavy drinker and I don't like the taste of alcohol, but these drinks are pretty tasty and strong. Also, the food they serve has large portions and is very tasty, complimenting alcohol well. The best part is that it is half off after 11 PM. The only word of caution is that it is a very small restaurant and you will have to wait outside to get in if you're going during a popular time!

I went to Mad Mex when I was a Pitt student. The food was always great and the service was superb. They had a lunch special of a burrito (which was huge) and a bowl of soup for six dollars. Also on the weekend the place is packed because the margaritas are huge and after two them you are pretty much done for the night. I suggest if you are in Oakland to stop by and have lunch, you won’t be disappointed

The atmosphere is amazing.
I have definetly eaten here more than any other place while in Pittsburgh. I've probably had every single thing on the menu at least once. My favorite meal by far is the Taco Salad, followed closely by the buffalo chicken wrap.
Best times to go:
2pm - 4pm Monday - Thursday (with a Student ID: half price)
4pm - 6pm (happy hour: can you say $6 22oz margaritas?)
11pm - 1am (half-price food for all, although you WILL have to fight lines)
There is nothing bad on this menu, the service is impeccable, and the booze is delicious. Perfect for people who like mexican and even those who don't.

While certainly a crowded location with cramped quarters and a line out the door, the half price 22 oz margaritas of a whole slew of flavors certainly makes up for it. The food is your average northeastern version of Mexican, but still fairly tasty. Be sure to check out the happy hours on Friday from 4:30-6:30 and take a special glance at the signs designating the bathroom. A word of caution: they are now fairly strict on IDs, so don't try a fake here.

If you go when food and drinks are half off, Mad Mex is a great bargain. Watch out for the crowds, though: my friends and I won't go here on weekends, when the dining room resembles a mosh pit. Also, this place's I.D. scanner operates Big Brother style, recording the last time you came in and taking your picture every visit.

This restaurant used to be a great place to go for half-priced food after 11 after a few Big Azz Margaritas. The food is generic mexican food, though compares well against nearby options. The bar scene continues to be a big draw to Mad Mex. The Big Azz Margaritas are 22 oz and are available on the rocks or great frozen flavors. The place seems to have been busted for serving underage patrons, though, since they now card everyone at the door. They also record the date and time of each of your visits on a computer system. A sign on the door says they will no longer admit anyone under 21 after 4 pm.

This restaurant in the heart of Oakland also doubles as a hoppin’ bar. Quarters are close, however, and you’ll find yourself with your elbow in an undergrad’s margarita without fail. The food is typical East Coast Tex-Mex: overly salted, unremarkable fare. The margaritas range from inexpensive and gigantic to more expensive with better liquor. Despite the small space and food that won’t make you write home to mom, the lighting and interior design makes Mad Mex a great place to go. It’s always filled with attractive, young patrons and might be the trendiest bar in Oakland. Make sure to call for reservations if you want a table.
