I have been going to the Union Grille for over four years, and it is a great little neighborhood restaurant and bar for a casual dinner. Since we live only a few blocks away, we, quite frequently, love to walk over to have a delicious dinner and few drinks. I highly recommend the Buffalo Chicken Salad or the Fish Tacos. I also love their brownie dessert. The servers here are amazing! In all of the times that we have gone, we have never had bad service. It gets croweded, and the wait can get long, but it is worth it! They also have really cute decorations that they change for each season/holiday.

Another time I had an excellent meal and the service was great....
Wine list is not huge here, but the prices are oh-so-reasonable. A $12 wine in the liquor store is an appropriate $15 here. No 100% markups for this local uppity-feeling restaurant.
Menu has some local 'delicacies', like mushroom sandwiches (what?) and buffalo chicken salads with fries on top (surprisingly good).
Service: 2/5
Food Quality: 3/5
Value: 2/5
Overall: 2/5 (not an average)

The Union Grill is a very good place to go if you are looking for traditional American food. They offer a variety of dishes, serving very tasty sandwiches as well as entrées. Beside that this is also a very good place to go as a college hangout; because it is located in the center of Pitt’s campus. You will always find many Pitt students here, in front of and s well as behind the counter

back in college this was considered an upscale establishment for me. However after visiting after graduation I don't know what I was thinking. The food is average and the service is ok. I think that it is a little overpriced for the area. The desserts however were great. I love the homemade pies.

The Union Grill, on Craig Street, was originally recommended to me by a hotel concierge for the quality of their crabcakes. Said crabcakes have a great flavor - they don't have the huge chunks of lump crab you'd get on the Eastern Shore - but you can choose one of four accompanying sauces (I suggest the lemon dill). As for the rest of the menu, it's your traditional American fare with Steel City personality (fries, cheese, and chili on a SALAD????)... all in all a good place to take picky relatives without having to sacrifice your own experience.

DON'T GO HERE! Union Grill is an energetic, crowded, and noisy restaurant/bar. The food is decent and affordable. The service is ok. The bar is stocked with standards, and the drinks vary depending on the bartender. Sometimes they are made pretty strong:)
If you want a quick bite to eat this is a good place to go. There usually is a wait in the evenings, since its a pretty small location and popular with the college students.
The place can also be rented out on Sunday nights for private parties.

The Union Grille is a great place in Oakland that features sandwiches, burgers, and other entrees that will please anyone’s taste. The only downside is their policy of 1 hour per party max. After being there an hour, they can kick you out. They also offer a nice bar and outside seating. It can get busy here, especially during peak times, so be prepared to wait!

The food hear maybe great, but the service stinks. I understand that during lunch, the place may get crownded, but our waiter never came to our table to refill our empty drinks. The restaurant was busy that Friday and the bar area is inadequate - we had to stand around for 15-20 minutes past our reservation time waiting on our table. Overall the experience was subpar.

The Union Grill is one of my favorite restaurants within walking distance from CMU campus. It tends to be pretty busy around lunch so if you go at this time, be prepared to wait a while. They have a policy that everybody at a table needs to be present before they'll seat you that can be kind of annoying. However, their food is good. The atmosphere is casual. One of my favorites of theirs is their Pittsburgh steak salad. Their desserts are great too.
