I am a Pitt student and broke my glasses a few weeks ago. I went into Oakland Fashion Optical because of the proximity to campus, but I discovered that it is one of the nicest eyeglass stores that I?ve been to. The staff was friendly and attentive?the salesman (his name was James) spent over an hour with me letting me try on almost every frame they had. Once I?d finally settled on a frame, he gave me a 20% student discount, then told me that I could pick my new glasses up later that afternoon! I?ve been wearing glasses all my life, and never have I gotten same-day service. By the end of the day I had an awesome pair of eyeglasses, and they didn?t even cost me $300! Since I don?t have eye insurance, that discount makes a world of difference. After some of the experiences that I?ve had at big eyeglass chain stores, it was a joy doing business at Oakland Fashion Optical. I plan on being their customer for as long as I live in Pittsburgh. I felt like the doctor could have been more personable. I felt that no one cared about my concerns but were quick to be defensive. Should be more accomodating to customers. I havent cried in a while, but i did today. I guess im just used to doctors and people who care about you and will help you when it comes to getting the right contacts instead of telling you to come back for another exam when the last one has been less then one year ago. And if you think im all wrong, atleast pretend to apologize-thats what you do with customers. Pros: location Cons: unfriendly and unhelpful

Frame selection seemed a bit limited, and I didn't care for the 'up-selling' of special lens coatings. Decent local optical store that can do pretty much anything you need, but if you want faster service and bigger selection (although you have to deal with the people) goto Lenscrafters or god help you, Wal-Mart. Recommended for people looking to replace frames in a hurry or get an adjustment to existing glasses.
