Sound of Market is a unique record/electronic store on 11 Street half a block from Market walking towards Chestnut street. They have a wide variety of electronics for your home and car, but the main focus is their wide variety of music. Unlike big record stores that mostly carry pop and commercial success music, SOM has a big selection of Jazz, Gospel and Dance music. You will find the hottest Urban sound being played in the store and if you are a DJ, you can buy 12" vinyls and import CDs. The sales associates are very knowledgeable of the different genres and you can even hum a song if you don't know the title. They will try to help you find the particular CD. They also have listening station where you can sample the entire CD before buying which lacks in the big music chain stores.

This little shop next to the White Dog cafe is chock full of very interesting things, especially good for finding interesting gifts when you are not looking with something specific in mind. There are many handmade items including jewelry, purses, artwork, kitchen magnets, and so forth. There are entertaining gifts like novelty soaps and other bath items, pins, and gadgets. When you sift through the basket of pins, you can certainly detect a certain political bias, but if that doesn't bother you, it's a terrific place to get such things. My only complaint might be the prices.

I'm surprised at what some people pay for phone service. Between cell phone and home phone service, it really seems steep for the ability to talk. I personally hate the phone and use it as little as possible. I actually cringe when the phone rings. After all, I'm usually eating, in the middle of something I don't want to put down, or, well you know, going to the potty. Anyway, I refuse to pay a lot of money for something I really wish I could do without.
When I signed up for home phone service the service representative went through all the options available hoping I would finally say yes to something. I don't need all those bells and whistles I kept telling her. Just give me the cheapest service available.
Did you know that they actually had a service for under $15.00 a month? Yes, no bells, whistles or extras. Just plain old service. I don't make a lot of calls, after all, I hate the phone and what is e-mail for anyway? I'd rather use the free e-mail unless it is something I need to immediately address. I get limited area service, no long distance, but I have a phone for emergencies and those few times you just have to make a phone call.
I have Verizon service. It does what it's suppose to do. The service representatives are very helpful when needed and polite to talk to. The added bonus, I save at least $15.00. I think the cheapest service through any competitor is $30.00.

If you're trying to save money and don't need the phone a lot, check with your local provider. I bet they have a cheap service that you didn't even know about. Also, if you use your cell phone more than your home phone, this would be great too. I can't cut my home phone because my cell phone doesn't work inside the house.

This is a definite must if you are visiting Philly! I lived in the city for a year and visited Pat's often. Anytime family members would come out to visit, a trip to Pat's was required. The cheese steaks are wonderful. Expect a wait, as they're usually busy, but it's worth it! I do miss this place!

Everything that RyanG says about St. Mark's is incredibly true. The building is from the mid-nineteenth century and though in some ways it shows its age, it is nonetheless maintained with great care by the parish. The Fiske doors that open onto Locust Street are not to be missed, whether or not you come inside -- lovely red with carving over the door and beautiful painting of the same. The gardens are tended by a crew of parishioners and are full of many lovely flowers.

Before I found XPN....I never knew who James Hunter was....I never knew what happened to Helen Leight/David Dye...and all the good ones!
Being a true 70's girl...it is so uplifting to have a local station that is still playing lots of Dylan and I was thrilled to see he made numero dos on the recent list voted by XPN listeners.
I would inspire anyone who is looking for a great alternative to the existing stations that call themselves "Classic Rock". WXPN is CLASSIC ROCK!
Thanks for everything you do!!

Could be some of the nicest people in Philly! I think this store is actually on 18th Street (that is what I am trying to review). The people are friendly and the prices are fantastic. Much better than Rittenhouse Market (or as we say, Rip-off market!) Good selection of fresh produce and other items (milk, cheeses, eggs, fresh juice, asian veggies). If you are short money, they are more than happy to lend you a few bucks! Who does that anymore! Cash only.
