Two busy bars, seven labyrinthine dining rooms (hung with photos of the former owner with all manner of celebrities) and a touristy gift shop provide the setting for this early 19th Century restaurant that many people consider the prime "destination" restaurant in Philadelphia. It is still a venue for many sports, political and show-biz folks who come to town. Mere mortals are welcome, too. This fine dining restaurant focuses on an American menu with a menu based largely on seafood. Expect the average entrée to cost over $30, and dress casual.

When I went here I had the chicken, and it was wholly unpleasant. I don't know if it was dropped on the ground or the chicken was diseased or the cook was taking the night off or what, but I couldn't even choke it down. I had heard all kinds of great things about this place and wasted money on a bad meal. The other courses were ok (salad and dessert), but overall it was a bad experience. It has a happy ending though, I sent a letter to the manager and he gave me a gift certificate for a free dinner for two, so I'll be heading back soon and will update this.
