DONT SUPPORT DA HATE... Pros: Delivery !!!!!! :-) Cons: Frogs, Racists, Freaks, Feces And An empty wallet 4 NOTHING ( NADA )

Worst

you donate furniture that is perfectly good condition, but they are very selective in picking furniture. The movers who came to pick it up were rude.

not a great experience. they could have been nicer. more

These people are jerks. 6/25/2010

I have never been treated like such a diseased human being for having Ikea furniture I'd like to donate. Yes, donate. Unbelievable. Pros: Hanging up on them Cons: Attitude more

They support criminals 8/15/2009

Uh, just so you people know, if you care, the owners of this place are part of the Uhuru radical movement. The money they make may go to a good cause, but the people themselves are not good people. They believe they shouldn't be held to the laws of society, and actually celebrated the criminals that shot police officers in this city. Not just saying this, look it up. more

Best Used Furniture Around! 11/26/2008

This store rocks! I love going in here every week and just browsing. Right now they are have a huge sale and it is great. I just found out that everything that they get is donated to them and that is why they always have a changing variety of furniture! Yeah, the furniture is donated to them and they raise money for this nonprofit (which I found online when I looked up Uhuru Furniture in Google-African People's Education & Defense Fund). Basically, this place has great buys and in a sinking economy, you can still feel good about shopping there. more

Good and bad donating experience 10/15/2008

Noble concept, worthy cause: good. Asked for photos of the furniture I wished to donate: good idea. Many hours after I sent the photos, they called me and said the pieces were good but they had no truck available for the day I needed it (contrary to what I was told initially): bad. Called me next day and said that a truck was available after all: great! Movers came earlier than expected: OK. One mover insisted on talking on his cell phone while lifting my queen size sofa bed over my marble dining table: BEYOND THE PALE! This man took risky behavior while talking on a cell phone to a new and bizarre level. Fortunately, nothing was damaged but this certainly does not inspire confidence. Pros: Charitable concept: good for donor, good for customer, good for charity. Cons: Incomprehensibly reckless mover more

Write your own reviews much? 9/16/2008

All of the positive reviews on this site were clearly written by Uhuru staff. I actually have bought and continue to buy things there, only because it's close to my home and work and sometimes you'll find unique things. However, their 'cause' is bizarre, especially considering almost all of the staff, especially those in charge, are white. Their print material on 'where your money goes' is pretty convoluted and never really adequately explains the 'African People's Defense Fund"". It's seriously a hilarious to watch these ridiculous white people walking around in ""ReparationsNow!"" tshirts. That being said, everything is completely over-priced and they rarely bargain with you, even if you're reasonable, since 'everything goes to a good cause'. They actually were selling on old, stained Ikea Lack side table for $20 when it sells AT IKEA NEW for $10!!!!! This place is really a joke and unless you're just plain lazy and don't care where your money goes (like me) don't bother Pros: sometimes can find unique pieces Cons: completely overpriced, more junk than good stuff, staff is weirdly pushy about the 'cause' more

Happy to Donate to Uhuru Furniture! 3/31/2008

I was looking for a way to deal with all my furniture when I moved back to the West Coast, and I am so glad I found Uhuru! I called and they were able to come out a few days later which was totally amazing. The movers were really nice, they came inside and picked up my stuff, even carried stuff down the stairs! these guys were better movers than the moving company I paid to bring my stuff in here! I had a very positive experience working with Uhuru. Pros: supports a good cause, lively and interesting ambience, great music, every time I shop there's new stuff Cons: it is hard to find parking more

Too picky 3/29/2008

Anything but losers... 3/29/2008

Uhuru Furniture is an amazing place. Everytime I am in there I wonder how hey can fit so much furniture in such a small space. I have heard that sometimes they are 'selective' when choosing what furniture to pick up for free as a donation, but I think I understand why, it is a really small space! The guys in there move so much furniture its incredible. The people that work there are so nice, always eager to help me and work with me. Also, the cause of the store, to raise money for the African People's Education and Defense Fund, is excellent, and the people that work there all want to make a serious change in the way things work now. I do not know any losers or clowns that work there, just a bunch of politically conscious people working for justice for the African Comunity. Oh yeah, and the furniture that they sell is awesome. more

Why would anyone buy from these clowns? 3/19/2008

If you want your money to go to a ridiculous pseudo-radical organization that employs a whole bunch of truly silly white people with over the top racial guilt, go right ahead and drop some dollars on these losers. I watched a driver of one of their trucks back into and destroy a beautiful old tree on Chestnut Street across from the Mutter Museum. I guess caring for the Earth is not on these ""activists'"" radar since they're too busy sucking up to prove their ""cred"" with their African overlords. Seriously people, do NOT give your money to this idiotic brood of racialist cult members. more

Do not get your furniture anywhere else! 11/13/2007

Seriously, Uhuru Furniture sells all real wood furniture like dressers and chests and cabinets and great couches and sofabeds and mirrors and lamps and tons of other stuff. Everything in the store is donated to the store in support of the African People's Education & Defense Fund and they pick up donations of furniture for free, and it is a tax deductible donation. The store is so small and the staff is mostly volunteer, so it is hard to be perfect, but the staff at the store really does strive to sell great stuff at great prices, and they really do strive to pick up furniture from all over the city, 6 days a week fast and free! So, go to the store as soon as you can and shop, donate, or volunteer! You will have a great experience at Uhuru Furniture. Pros: The store sells a variety of great stuff! Also, who else do you know that will pick up furniture from your place in a convenient one-hour time slot for free?? Cons: There is not that much parking at the store as it is located in Center City, Philadelphia. more

Terrible Customer Service 5/31/2007

I recommend not using this company to pick up your furniture. Their customer service is terrible; they are unresponsive to telephone calls; and their ""selectivity"" when it comes to furniture will you leave you in a bind when it comes time to move out of your apartment. It was the worst experience I have ever had with respect to a company's customer service. It is, of course, an excellent cause; this does not give them the right, however, to treat their customers like garbage. more

Great people and great selection! 11/4/2005

I would say that at least half, if not more, of the furniture in my apartment came from this store. They always have a variety of items, new and old, in great shape and in fixer-upper shape. The sales staff is always extremely friendly and knowledgeable. They will take down your information if you are looking for one specific item and call you if something similar to what you are looking for comes in. GREAT STORE!!! Pros: Friendly, Great Selection, CHEAP!!! Cons: Parking in Area Tough, Small Store more

Best Store in Philly! 10/31/2005

What could be better than finding fabulous treasures while supporting economic development and social justice for the black community? Uhuru Furniture is just amazing! New stuff in every day and a group of staff and volunteers that provide customer service like no other place in the tri-state area! more

Not your typical store 9/25/2004

No matter what you're looking for, you can find it at Uhuru Furniture. The space is small, but highly active - every day the displays change with freshly donated pieces. Not only is the customer service wonderful, but you don't have to feel guilty about spending money on yourself, because it's a fundraiser for justice and economic development for the Black community. It's even better than charity, because it's controlled by the African working-class themselves, through the African People's Education & Defense Fund. Pros: always new things, great prices, politically active Cons: , parking is difficult, sometimes crowded more
