Penang is a great place for a quick snack or a full meal. They have a huge menu with a wide variety of Malaysian dishes to chose from, and there is usually very little if any wait for a table. The service is fast and attentive and the decor is pretty cool. The crispy fried squid appetizer is not to be missed. Golden pieces fried to perfection in a delicious batter, yum!! The prices here are really very reasonable, and the food is awesome. Make Penang a stop next time you are in Chinatown.

I have never seen anyone dissappointed at Penang. Located in chinatown, its in the bustle of everything, and very close to Market East. The Mango Chicken is definitly my favorite dish. It comes in a mango, with a sweet yet spicy sauce. Penang has a lively atmosphere. Not good if you want a quite dinner. Go there for a night out with friends, and you will really feel like you have gone out. Penang can be very busy, and it does get crowded. the tables are rather close together, and are often all full. If that is not what you want, do not go here! But it is a testament to their excellent food.

Philadelphia really needed a decent Singaporean / Malaysian restaurant. Fortunately, there is Penang. Located in the midst of Chinatown, it is easy to find. The dishes are tasty and the offerings are plentiful. The service is lightening fast. The last time I went, we were able to eat and run within thirty-five minutes. That’s pretty incredible given that the party size was eleven people!

At dinner it gets very crowded, so you might have to wait a bit. The food is very nice and the waitstaff is efficient and friendly. I don't believe they take credit cards, so bring enough cash.

Their spicy Thai chicken rice is also worthy of try. I have been there many times and I still cannot stop keeping going there to eat. Be sure to take cash. They don’t accept credit card.

OK, so it's a little bit off the beaten path. But Penang serves up everyone's favorite Malaysian cuisine in an eclectic setting right in the heart of Philadelphia's Chinatown. If you are new to Malaysian food, be sure to sample the Lobak (like a fritter with taro inside and fried), Satay (grilled kebabs in peanut sauce), and Roti Canai. (fried pancake to dip with curry!) For desserts, try the Ice Kachang (shaved ice with toppings). Here's a warning: the food is spicy! They aren't kidding on the menu! Also, if you don't like the taste of coconut, be careful. Many meals have coconut milk in them. If you are one who loves new adventures, be sure to try Penang. The price is very reasonable and you won't be disappointed.

Penang, a chain with restaurants also in NYC, features tasty Malaysian food which is a bit like a cross between Thai, Chinese, and Indian cooking. The menu is extensive featuring entrees which are big enough for 3 people easily in the low teens range and a selection of "rice dishes" which at about $6 are deceptively inexpensive but are plenty of food for dinner for one person. Of the appetizers, I highly recommend curry chicken with bread - it's Indian-food like. Of the rice dishes, I like the Beef Rendang which is a beef stew with coconut flavoring. Its definitely worth the extra dollar to upgrade to the coconut rice. Of the desserts, the fried bananas with coconut ice cream are delicious. The look of the place is very hip and trendy with exposed pipes in the ceiling - hipster industrial. They serve beer and wine, no hard alcohol. Cash only (no credit cards!).

I must say that Penang is one of the most compelling restaurants to visit, everytime I have been away from Philadelphia for some time. The rule here should be to start with the must-have appetizer; the softest indian pancakes with penang's special curry/potato/chicken dip (See the first item on the list of appetizers). Even for those who dislike curry, this could be a heavenly experience. And from there on flows the rest of the penang experience; a huge variety of foods at affordable prices. Some of the must-have main courses here would be the Noodles with chicken and salted fish (the cracked pieces of salt add a great flavor to the fish) and the Mango Chicken varieties. Of course, this restaurant has a lot more to offer, and should have something for everyone.
