Artifax is a well known Northeast Philly institution. Artifax is a smoke shop as well as a smokers dream come true. You will most likely find whatever it is that you're looking for here, if not just ask and someone will help you get it. They have a rather extensive collection of Zippo lighters that is great for the collector. Be warned that this shop is small and the space can get tight.

Aka is competing with the likes of Tower and, in my opinion, they kick arse. Located in Olde City, this little joint is a real gem. If I am not able to find what I want, they are able to get it for me. They have a wide selection of new and used music and there is generally something cool playing while you shop. I have sold some cd's and they give a fair price -- store credit or cash. The prices are reasonable which is commendable for a non retail giant.

I like this place because they offer music lessons and have good teachers for it. I like checking out music stores and yeah this one has the usual variety of things, but you can really have a good conversation with the staff. Everyone there seems to love music, and they actually let you haggle for stuff. Cool.

So you hear this name and you think like weird techno futurama music, but no, this is a cool shop with punk/indie cds. I like shops the offer used stuff, and they also have a list of local upcoming shows which is nice. You could miss it if you didn't know where it was, so watch carefully for it, and when you see it hit it up. It's worth it.

Main Street Music, located in Manayunk, is a small, independent music store for those who love music. They offer new, as well as used, CD's for your pleasure. You'll be able to find most types of music in this shop, but you'll be more likely to find indie rock happenings here. If you can't find what you're looking for, just ask... the staff will help you. If you have a free moment try out a listening station, you just may like what you hear. This store does get crowded at times, especially with the college aged population and/or indie rockers of the area. Main Street Music also has a pretty decent trade in policy for used CD's, so get rid of the old and find something new for your CD Player.

Sound of Market is a unique record/electronic store on 11 Street half a block from Market walking towards Chestnut street. They have a wide variety of electronics for your home and car, but the main focus is their wide variety of music. Unlike big record stores that mostly carry pop and commercial success music, SOM has a big selection of Jazz, Gospel and Dance music. You will find the hottest Urban sound being played in the store and if you are a DJ, you can buy 12" vinyls and import CDs. The sales associates are very knowledgeable of the different genres and you can even hum a song if you don't know the title. They will try to help you find the particular CD. They also have listening station where you can sample the entire CD before buying which lacks in the big music chain stores.

the most extensive collection of movies i've ever seen anywhere - just make sure you have ample time to browse if you don't know exactly what you want. the staff is entirely composed of helpful film buffs - made that way through an arduous application process (i applied, and clearly my knowledge of movies was not enough to even warrant an interview!). if you can't find the movie you want to see in this place, it just doesn't exist on portable media.

Philadelphia record exchange always reminds me of the movie hi Fidelity. Its a great store with an ecceletic mix of people working there. They have a great selection of tapes, cds, and vinyl records. They always have the records i was looking for and if they dont they will try to get it for you. Its a nice place to spend a lieseurely afternoon. They also buy all used cds, tapes and records if you want to trade your old music.

No bathrooms that I know of.
Music is EXPENSIVE.
Sometimes you can find a deal on DVDs, but anything new or popular is going to be pricy.
Staff is as helpful as can be expected.
