I love the Ritz theater! The whole experience is so different than the average movie theater. No commercials, lovely artwork displayed on the screen prior to the movie, decent tra...

Ritz Theatres 5/9/2006

Try Ritz theatres; there are three in Center City (all in Old City) & at least one in Haddonfield, NJ -- www.ritzfilmbill.com. Interesting selection, cozy, classic. There's also the Roxy (20th and Sansom) which is smaller and not as quality, but may be more conveniently located for lazy nights. :) more

great movies, tiny space 3/17/2006

If you’re fat, don’t go here. The seats are much narrower than other Ritz theaters and the leg room is much shorter than most theaters. If you have anxiety or claustrophobia issues, don’t go here. It’s underground. Unfortunately, many of the best movies play here, so you may be forced to make a go of it. If you do: Don’t go on a Friday as it will be very, very crowded Try going on a day when you don’t have a coat, scarf, etc. It will make seating much easier. Get there early so you don’t have to climb over everyone to get a seat. Trust me—it’s harder than normal at this theater. more

Great movie theater 2/5/2006

One of the three indipendent movie theaters in Center City, they're always better than regular movie theaters. They're cheaper (especially for students), have movies that require more than "oooh, look at the special effects," and have better snacks to munch on. While the theaters aren't as big or flashy and the seats don't all rock back and forth, it makes for a better overall moviegoing experience. more

Good theater 10/25/2005

This movie theater has its good and bad points, but overall the good win out I think. Good – Transit accessible, modern design and amenities, ample parking of any kind, you can enter it while avoiding all the tourists on the opposite side of the building, I like that it is underground, the escalator ride down makes me feel like I’m decending into movie land. Bad – Waiting in line outside for tickets in a dirty alley/parking structure location, Fairly pricy at $9 for adults. more

Great theatre 9/28/2005

The one drawback to this theatre is that you have to wait in line for the tickets outside. Fine in good weather, but when it's cold or rainy it sucks. Once in though, the theatre is great. The screening rooms are comfortable (if one the small side) and miracle of miracle, patrons are actually pretty respectful during the movies (no cell phones or loud talking). more

Top of the Line 8/19/2005

First run foreign, independent and "art" films presented in a clean, quiet, well-run setting. Good snacks, and an informative "Playbill" -style guide to what's playing and what's coming, here and at their other locations. What more could you want? more

Art House Cinema 8/18/2005

Ritz at the Bourse, like the Ritz 5 Theater, offers arthouse fare and the more thoughtful Hollywood pictures. It is owned by the same parent company as the Ritz 5. However, it has more screens than the Ritz 5 which has a paultry one screen. It also has the student/senior discounts as well as the Wednesday night showing discounts. The snacks here are equally gourmet while still including favorites like popcorn. more

Artsy films 8/18/2005

First movie I saw at this theater was 'The joy luck club', this theater remind of old style art houses. Staff is very friendly and the concession stand has a bigger selection besides your usual hot dogs, popcorn, soda and candy. One drawback is that when a popular indie movie is showing, tickets are gone in a wink. Parking can also be very troublesome, because your local street parking only gives you a two hour limit but there is garage right next to the theater with slightly higher prices than parking on the street. I have been back plenty of times and have never been disappointed at this theater. more

a luxurious waiting experience 8/11/2005

This theater is, by far, the nicest one I have ever been to. There's a waiting area next to the snack stand that is nicer than some upscale restaurants, and the food offerings range from mango juice to smoothies to gyros. I wouldn't be surprised if they served caviar. The theaters themselves are also nice, with cushy velvet seats. more

Movies to Think About 8/6/2005

Philly residents are familiar with the Ritz, a mini chain in the Philly region which specializes in art house and related types of movies. They do show conventional hits as well, but their speciality, I suppose, would be movies that make you think - instead of being merely entertained. Bottom line really is - if you want to watch the latest blockbusters, go to a multiplex in the suburbs, but if you favor a something a little more... cerebral... (or if you're just feeling pretentious, I guess) then check out the Ritz! Recently Watched: - Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room. (a cautionary tale of what you shouldn't do when trying to screw over your shareholders) more
