If you loved homemade baked goods but don't have the time or inclination or skill to do it yourself, or if you want to visit Amish Country and can't make the trip, stop by Beiler's Bakery. My only complaint is that they're only at Reading Terminal Market from Wednesday to Saturday, but that's because I love their stuff so much.
I'd never had a whoopie pie before going to Beiler's, and I can't say that I need to go anywhere else for one because this is one of those desserts that just hits the nail on the head for me. Everything they sell from the pies to their breads (to their whoopies) reminds me of food the way it used to be. When you could buy things and eat them and not have to wonder what was in it or who made it or where it came from. It's food that won't be kind to your waistline, but I'm glad there's a bakery in Philly that remains unpretensious and deliciously calorie-rich for when I want to remember my childhood.
