I have been going to the gym for 2 years. Every gym is busy at peak hours, and 12th st is no exception; however, what makes the place stand out are the classes offered by great instructors. Also, they are in the globalfit network, if your employer offers that.

I've had a hard time finding a good club and finally I have found one that motivates me to work out. The group classes are excellent, the staff is friendly and the facility is up to date with great equipment. I notice that they listen to the members and work hard to make everyone comfortable. It doesn't just have a gym feel to it, it has a "club" feel, where you are taken care of.

sorry, but there were too many muscle meat heads at this place. I went on a 2 week trial membership and was not impressed with the gym. The machines were nice, but felt very compact. Then the weight area is full of testo. Grunts and screams are heard everywhere! I was much more impressed with Philly Sports Club or even the Ballys (although avoid Ballys, i hear their contracts are impossible to get out of)

Although this club has a large variety of exercise machines and lots of classes for group and individual exercise I was really surprised when I asked at the desk about elevators to the lower floor. That is where the pool is located. I was told there is no elevator and no other way but steps to reach that level. Also, to come into the club there is a flight of stairs leading up to the main level. I was shocked that there is NO WAY for people with mobility problems to access these facilities. What's up with that!

The Sporting Club at the Bellevue is a great gym. They have all the latest equipment. I love going there in the morning because it is never crowded. Personal trainers are also available to help you. The cost of membership is very expensive but it is a nice gym. They also have healthy snacks after after a hard workout. It is one of my favorite gyms.

I took my sons here on advice from a friend! This is an enormous place. It is the biggest of its kind on the east coast, or something like that. Anyway, they have a kids area with guides and my 10 year old opted for that. He had a wonderful time. My fourteen year old took a beginners lesson with the "adults" (and teens). He had a blast and he really started to get the hang of it thanks to a great instructor. My kids cannot wait until they can drag their Dad back there and after hearing their rave reviews he is excited too!!
The kids were worn out after their climbs, but they were so happy and had such a great time that they said it was really worth it!!!

Class of 1923 Ice Rink is associated with the University of Pennsylvania and offers hockey, freestyle skating, and Saturday night skates during the school year. The Saturday night skates are especially popular for the popular music, the lighting, and the chance for UPenn undergrads to go either on dates or to meet people. Lessons are also offered.

More
The new Pottruck Center offers 19,000 square feet of exercise equipment including a juice bar, a three story climbing wall, classes, a pool and sauna, and all the exercise equipment you can desire. The major disadvantage is that membership is limited to people associated with UPenn. Also, the weight room tends to be heavily populated by men so can be intimidating for women wantinng to work out there. Parking can also be difficult. However, if you are a UPenn student, membership is about $20/month for some of the best facilities in the city.
