I brought my friends from out-of-town with a new baby to Mama Palma's for lunch on Friday. At first they thought it best to go for take-out for fear that the baby might be too fussy. When the pizza came and the baby was sleeping soundly, we asked if we could eat in instead, to which the response was: "This isn't going to work. We don't like the look of the box on the table. Once it's take-out it's take out." As the waiter was asking us (paying, civil customers) to leave, we could hear the proprietor shouting about us from the back room. Needless to say I was thoroughly upset and embarrassed and won't go back. I didn't notice all the negative reviews before, but I'm here to confirm that they seem to be true.

My family and I have lived in the Fitler Square neighborhood now for the better part of this decade, so dining in/ taking out from Mama Palma's has turned into a frequent, weekly routine. Oh, and this is not because it is convenient for us. This is because it truly is some of the best pizza we have ever had! The pizzas are all so well-crafted and unique. My daughters LOVE the 'polenta bread plate!' We've never had anything like it. Definitely recommend nibbling on this as you decide on the rest of the meal. Usually one of the kind owners delivers it to our table.
Sometimes it can feel a little rushed inside, but that is only because this place is small and always busy.
Pros: Great food, Always packed
Cons: Might have to wait for a table

A fantastic family run restaurant. The two owners are wonderful, I have no idea who the Pizza Na#i is referring to, but that guy who wrote the review below must have had a stick up his a$$. Mama Palma's serves superb, unique pizza dishes and while it does get busy, that's only because it is so good. If you like delicious pizza, tasty salads, a great selection of beer, and a fun wait staff, this place is the cream of the crop.

Update 8/14/09: Since my post, two posts followed fitting the pattern observed by past posters who pointed that it is the owner(s) making these "beautiful person" recommendations and "shame on you" statements. How lame! You aren't fooling anyone, owner in disguise. Looking back in past years shows similar posts by customers being rushed out. There are only so many people willing to shell out for overpriced pizza and beer and getting an attitude back. Make it a good run!
My original post:
I now know the inspiration for Seinfeld's "Soup Na#i". Not permitted to type the intended word. I went there for my birthday because we heard it had good pizza and beer. We order a $21 large pizza, and a couple of $7 Paulaners, both prices were too high. My wife and I finish the pizza and it turns out we are still hungry so we ask to see the menu to order a salad and more beer. The server told us that we could only order take-out as they have people waiting on the table. I insist on ordering, stating I did not know the pizza would not fill us up. The owner then comes over and again tells us the policy for ordering additional food, but that this time only she will let us order. My wife is from Japan and immediately says, "Let’s go", because in Japan a customer would never, ever be spoken to this way, where they are treated like kings. Annoyed, I tell the owner that we're done and she just lost a customer for life and she responds "don't you dismiss me, I'm the owner". I give it right back, telling her, among other things, it must be a good problem to be able to tell a customer willing to pay more money to leave. I mean for all she knows we might have ordered two more overpriced pizzas and beer. I expect this attitude in New York City, probably where she is from. Therefore, the bottom line is you need to order all of your food in advance and do not dare speak your mind to the Pizza Na#i, they are too concerned with turning over tables. They are doing you the favor by serving you, just like the Soup Na#i. In addition, judging from many previous posts, the owner and staff treat others this way. Go around the block to Gusto on 22nd Street: it is better pizza, it is reasonably priced and more importantly, the owner appreciates your business.
Pros: None
Cons: High Prices and an owner who needs a reality-check.

A group of friends and I recently tried Mama Palma and will never go back even though we live on the same block. The pizza was good, but that's about it. The server was extremely rude and judgemental right away. They also fail to define their definition of BYOB, ie they serve beer, so therefore they only 'open' wine; you cannot bring beer. The waitress very rude when explaining this after she saw we brought beer. Also, the owner at the counter does not deserve to be in this country, nevermind own a somewhat thriving business. He is the most miserable, mean-spirited, ungrateful and frankly cruel person I've ever seen. He went so far as to make fun of one of the girls I was eating with, and got the rest of the wait staff to join in. They thought they were being discrete, but were anything but. I used to be a waitress in college and have high respect for service people and usually give them the benefit of the doubt because I can relate to having a bad night, etc. 18% gratuity was added to our bill (which is highly insulting unless it's a large party) and of course we did not leave any extra after the experience we had. They had no idea that we are usually very generous tippers. Please spread this word - the owner of this place does not deserve to stay in business!
Pros: None
Cons: Service/Owner

I love the pizza here. The crust is fantastic (try the whole wheat) and they have combos for the simple standard pizza lover and the gourmet. The stromboli are great, as well as the pasta dishes. I have never had a bad meal here. The servers are friendly and remember the regulars.
I'm just shocked by the reviews about the owner and staff being rude. I have been to this restaurant at least once a month int he last two years and have always received stellar service. I can only assume someone has a personal gripe with the owner and is using the reviews as a way to get even. It took me months to figure out who the owner actually was, I wonder how they all knew so quickly?
Pros: great pizza, best staff
Cons: Can be crowded

Our favorite spot doesn't need reviews.........in fact, it gets too crowded anyway, so please go to Pizza Hut. What's funny are the negative reviews......."I want a free polenta, my child wants a different taffy, can I sit at the head of the table, in the aisle, blocking everything............I'm a sacred prophet in my country."
Thankfully, the negative reviewers will never come back...which leaves more great salads, pizza and room for me to enjoy. I wish a few others would stay away too. BTW, Renato is terrific.
Pros: Mama, Renato, Brun, Big Steve, Lil Steve, Dave, The Boys
Cons: arrogant customers with wild screaming kids
