I went to Pasadena Cyclery for the very last time tonight. I did buy a bike from them years ago and it was a pleasant enough experience.
I want to replace the aforementioned bike, as it was stolen. I have walked into the shop last summer, and again last Spring and I have not been able to bring myself to give them my money. Each time, I am ignored. Today, as I went to the counter to ask a question, some guy did not even look up from what he was doing. Then he turned around and announced he was clocking out.
I should give him the benefit of the doubt, but this is after a long line of snubs. I am an overweight woman who wants to get back in better shape. I rode bikes on long treks when I was younger, and owned a couple of premium bikes. I am attracted to the bikes - but not the staff. When I decide which bike to buy, and it will be in the $500 and above range, it will be at another shop that sells Trek or Dahon.
The thing is that it looks like their customer service is the problem, so losing this sale won't mean much. Just save your money for another, better bike shop.

I'm a student and I went to Pasadena Cyclery to get the quick releases taken off my wheels so that they wouldn't get stolen at school. The staff seemed to treat me as unworthy of their attention because I merely used my bike to commute around campus. They didn't have the part I needed and the saleman said something to the effect of I suppose I could order that part, but I can't imagine why anyone would want to take their quick releases off a bike... Shortly there after I had my front wheel stolen and needless to say I went to a different shop to purchase a new wheel.

The selection is very broad; whether you want a road or mountain bike. Should check it out.

Combine high prices with only an alright selection and an uncaring, stuffy salestaff and Pasadena Cyclery is what you get. In general the staff is unhelpful, and when you ask what you think are reasonable questions (such as where are the tubes) you get condescending answers. It's a convenient store for those in the Pasadena area, but I'd suggest going elsewhere.

I went to buy a birthday bike for my husband and the staff was very helpful- especially since I wanted it to be a surprise. They helped me size the bike, choose some options, and get the accessories he'd need to commute. Best of all, as we concluded the transaction I learned that they offer a discount for Caltech affiliates.

This place has a large selection of kids and women's bikes. The staff is very helpful -- we are beginners and don't know much about bikes, but they helped us find the most comfortable ones for us. Although we didn't buy anything, they were not pushy or overly aggressive. It really seemed like they were eager to help us and inform us about their products.

Not as fancy as Velo Pasadena down Colorado Blvd, but still a good collection of bikes, wheels, and frames for a variety of needs--road, mountain, 'cross, even some BMX. Good mechanic, based on the work he's done for me. This shop carries Treks, Gary Fisher, and Lemond (and possibly others as well, but those are the ones I've noticed). Prices seem to be at market value. Not high, but not bargain basement either. Definitely worth visiting.
Pros: Good mechanic, Variety
