I went with a friend of mine for a casual dinner. The best samosas I have ever had. I focus on the little things like chutneys and raitas and Chef Sachin Chopra delivered what I have been looking for over 9 years in US now - both were the best by far.
Sure the items on the menu were a bit expensive (Entre: 18-50 I guess), but food quantities were quite generous. We knew we ordered a bit extra, but the left overs laster me for 2 full meals. Our total bill was $87 (plus tip) - not bad huh!!
I haven't tried their non-veg menu yet, but can't wait to go again.... at the very least once....
If you like authentic Indian food, made and served gourmet style and don't mind paying that little extra price, then you have to give this a try. Hope you like it just as much too.

I was pleasantly surprised when my friends invited me to Straits Cafe last week. I haven't been there for a while now and the place has changed! ---for the better!!
The deco is so much subdue now...like the place has matured. I like the host, who was very polite and helpful. We went at Happy Hours and stayed until dinner. The drinks were only $5 unitl 6:00pm. Great value. The roti was still the best in town. The grilled sea-bass was out of this world. Definitely will go back again with my date.

While it's small, it's located in the heart of Palo Alto. It's all standard Indian food faire - heavily cumined - but very tasty and a nice veggy selection. Our waiter was a guy named Baldev - ask for him - he was great. Good stuff.

Wow! This is the best Indian restaurant in the Bay Area. I went there last night with my two friends. The food was fantastic. We started with the appetizers-Chicken Tikka and Mixed Bhajias DELICIOUS. Then we ordered Paneer Do Piayza, Butter chicken, Lamb Saag for the main meal which was served along with Pilau rice, Nan, Dal and Raita. Everything was very delicious. I want to try their Lunch Buffet .
The prices are reasonable and staff is very attentive. The restaurant is very clean. I can't wait to go there again.
Whoever likes Indian food must try this one!

Janta provides a great week-day buffet. The selection is reliably tasty, familiar and not oily. They also serve warm and creamy chai. Because it's a buffet, service is minimal but the woman who brings the warm nan and the bill is nicely unobtrusive and efficient. Try it Monday-Friday for lunch.
PROS: Great flavor, reasonable price, cute building
