This local theatre is definitely the best theatre in Palo Alto. Avoid the souless, mega mall feel of the other closest movie theatres and go to the Aquarius to see the most interesting recently released independent films. It only shows two films at a time, and the runs are fairly short. It's very small and for opening nights of some hyped films (e.g., Sideways, etc), you have to get there early to get in line so you're not sitting in the back corner, or so you can even get tickets. They also have great concessions, including cookies and hot chocolate. Just saw the Aristocrats and the manager introduced the film with a short speech (and warning about the vulgarity of the movie) - it was a great communal feeling that so many movie theatres lack.

More
Cinearts, located on the corner of Page Mill Rd. and El Camino Real in Palo Alto is a small, aging movie theater that shows only classic and indie films. It's one of the few places you can catch the random, odd films that came fresh out of the Cannes film festival. It's kind of like an IMAX theater but without the big screen.
The theaters and screens are small, and you normally get a local crowd (no one travels far to see these films). That said, it's like your typical indie theater and there is nothing out of the ordinary here.
One thing this theater does have: a conession stand with conessions to match normal movie theater pricing.

My wife bought her first banjo here. It was a bit slow getting help but she got a really nice one for a good price. I also took guitar lessons through this store and had a great time. They have lots of instruments and supplies, and connections to people who give lessons on instruments of all kinds. The location is great and it is important that we support local businesses!

More
A pet project of a wealthy bay-area business man, the Stanford Theater harkens back to the golden age of film, and of movie stars -- when acting meant something. It exclusively specializes in "old movies" scheduling marathons of rotating subjects -- one week it may be Betty Davis, the next Cary Grant. If you dig old black and white movies, and want to see them on the big screen as they were intended, this is your chance to relax, grab some popcorn, and enjoy. Intermission (yes intermission) is still heralded by a live pipe organ, and the heavy red curtains that hide the screen when not in use lend to the lavishness of the entire experience. A true movie-connoisseurs theater! Call to find out what's playing now! It’s currently undergoing renovation and expansion. (Re-opens 6-Aug-05)

More
San Francisco may be known for opera, but it is not the only place around here that you can see and hear great performances. The peninsula has its very own company, West Bay Opera, which puts on various full-fledged shows throughout the year. Founded by an opera aficionado, and local resident, the opera company has stayed true to its roots, putting on lovely shows in (most-often) intimate settings by making use of area performance venues. The company also uses area singers and performers to fill in choruses and parts, and the headliners are also sometimes local personalities. Much of the stage crew work is performed by volunteers.
