I went here last night, after months of walking by it and seeing all of the articles about it in the windows. I love North Indian food, and eat it pretty often, so I was very excited to finally get a chance to try this place. Unfortunately, it was a very disappointing experience.
The menu has a lot of variety, with an emphasis on traditional classics. I ended up going for the buffet, so I could try a variety of dishes. The buffet was small, with two meat-dishes and three vegetarian dishes. I'm a vegetarian, so I only tried those three. Very bland, very boring dishes, and not particularly good. One chickpea dish, one potato dish, and one spinach dish. The chickpeas and the potatoes were decent, but the spinach was pretty terrible. The Nan was definitely a disappointment as well. Poorly cooked -- mostly fairly crunchy . . . not soft at all. There were a few other typical Indian foods on the buffet, and most were not warm, or very disappointing in taste. The one bright spot was the Mulligatawny soup, which was quite good.
Service was fairly unresponsive and slow as well. They do have a good selection of Indian beer here, but that isn't enough to make me return. I had very high hopes for Khyber Pass, but from the service to the food, it was a very disappointing experience.

I am so glad I found this Oak Park charmer. It took me a lifetime (and that's a whole lot of years...) to finally give Indian food a try. And boy, was I surprised at how much I loved it! Part of the charm was the quaint dining area and the superb service, but the food was also very good. They have a small but unique buffet for lunch and dinner and they feature some great, authentic Indian sitar music on Friday nights. Stop by this little restaurant and you'll be happy you did!

This is a very authentic Indian restaurant. The food, the decor even the live music they feature on Fridays is authentic. The problem for me is that I can't eat this food very often, nor do I have a taste for it. The other issue I found when dining there is I think they should strive to make their buffet a little better and keep things a bit fresher.

I live in Oak Park and eat a Khyber Pass numerous times. The food is outstanding, the service staff very friendly, and the owner is often there overseeing everything. Particularly good is the Lamb Biriani and the Chicken Vindaloo. The latter is only for those who like their food HOT! And there's always Tandoori Chicken, also quite good. The buffet is good, but I generally get from the menu. The portions are huge, my wife and I usually order one entrée between us. I highly recommend this restaurant.

Went here for a birthday one year. They had a buffet in the evening, and it was wonderful to try so many different items, and to go back as many times as you want!! They also had a delicious ice cream dessert on the buffet. I love the atmosphere, the history/geography they are based on, and the food. Excellent.

Khyber Pass received "4 Forks" from the Tribune, but I would give it "4 'Bended' Forks." The restaurant is nicely decorated with all the glitter and glamour, but its food is not up to par. I went there for dinner one night encouraged by the "4 Forks" rating only to find out the hard way. I ordered the buffet feast which comes with all the basic and specialty menu items. The foods was normal and the curries were alright. The nan was pretty good - but how can you mess up on nan's? Anyhow, having experienced and traveled to many Southeast Asian regions and having had Indian curry and nan from street vendors without any problem, my dinner at Khyber Pass gave way to major diarrhea later that night. Needless to say, I am not going back.
