If you're looking for a toy from your childhood, Pumpkin Moon is the place to go! You'll get lost in this store, with it's retro tin mechanical toys, tops, and all sorts of other treasures! Their prices are moderate, especially if you consider the gotta-have-it factor. I'm sure they could charge much more for the memories of childhoods past. You might want to leave the kiddies at home, though. You'll want to browse through your memories without having someone tugging on your leg, asking for a gotta-have-it toy for his or her own new memories!

This isn't your average book store. For a small store, of course they don't have a huge number of books. Their inventory focuses mainly on books based on African & African-American culture. What makes them so unique are their variety of oils, soaps, t-shirts, masks, sculptures, and other specialty items. They also have numerous events each month from book signings to discusions on community issues. It's a great place that brings people together to learn more about their culture, be expressive, and participate in a dialogue where they can be proactive within the community.

Fitzgerald's has very nice stationery and other paper products. I particularly like their scrapbooking materials. I was able to buy a very nice one at a great price. This store has more than pens and paper, so be sure to stop by.

Alphabet Shop is an awesome shop that carries a variety of gifts and home items. And its seasonal decorations warrants a special trip (even if it is just window shopping) each holiday season and beyond (e.g. Christmas, Halloween). You can find lotions, candles, cards, lamps, chess sets, figurines, jewelry, wall art, etc. Its inventory is ever changing. With the movement of chain stores arriving in the OP/RF area, the shop provides a little getaway from the commercial world.

The name of this store tells you nothing about what it sells- mostly kitschy, fun uber-trendy trinkets and household items like bowls made from newspaper by women in some third-world country and "ugly" dolls. It's worth a visit to this Oak Park locale just to see the amazing interior design of the store- note the art tiles on the front counter and the fabulous floral painting on the East wall. Some of the items are pricey (i.e. the adorable diaper bags which surely only Oak Park and downtown elite can afford to carry wipes and Desitin in). Despite the pricey items there is something for everyone- fun candles shaped like sushi for 3 bucks, cards funny and artful enough to frame for 2.50, amazing wrapping paper and a variety of uniquely scented candles. get on their mailing list and they will let you know about fun events like their recent Cinco De Mayo/Anniversary party and an upcoming signing by a popular card artist.

This is absolutely my favorite store for gifts, trinkets jewelry and any fun unique items. They have great artists and frequent clearances and sales. One half of the store is household type decorations and the other half is filled with beautiful clothing (no plus sizes though). they frequently have new merchandise and ALWAYS have something interesting and beautiful. If you are in Oak Park you simply MUST visit this store.

The name of this store tells you a lot about the merchandise- undoubtedly unique! The store is located next to the Post Office, in the garden level of an old Victorian. The garden level has been re-done into a store- with hand poured flooring and carved pillars that are works of art in themselves. Although the location might seem a bit odd, it so so worth a visit. The items in the store hail from a variety of artists- everything from paintings to sculptures to handmade cards, scarves, clothing and jewelry. The prices are reasonable considering what is being offered. I can always find a "unique" and interesting gift for a loved one.
They might seem a bit off the beaten path- not quite on "The Avenue" (oak park avenue and lake area) and not quite downtown- sort of in-between the two areas. They are right near the Frank Loyd Wright Unitarian church- so if you are in town seeing the sites make sure you cross the street from the temple and take in the wonders at this store! You may want to call ahead for hours.

Lindsey Gallery has, in my opinion, one of the best collections of artistic jewelry in Oak Park. They offer pieces from a diverse array of artists (local and international artists). Although at times the prices seem quite high to me, some of the pieces seem to be worth the higher price since they are mostly hand crafted and original. The Gallery also has a variety of decorative items and is even featuring a dollar table. Parking is easiest on North Blvd, just near the El.

This charming little store is tucked in the edge of the pedestrian mall off Lake Street in downtown Oak Park. Although a much better known chain store is just around the corner from Fitzgerald's, Fitzgerald's has a slightly different selection from the stores around it. They offer personalized attention for special orders and have a section set aside where you can browse stationary or invites for personalizing. The price is mid-range, and they have a really hip and frequently changing selection of stationary and stationary sets.
