The place has really changed for the worse. The pork chops we had were waaay too salty, but my dogs really seemed to enjoy them. When I first found this place years ago on 58th and Shattuck in Berkeley, it was fantastic.
Pros: cornbread muffins and collard greens were great
Cons: Overall: Food was terrible and the music was too loud

The food here is great where it reminds me of my grandmother southern dishes. If you are in the West Oakland area and you are looking for a southern mean that will bring soul to your bones Nellie's Soul food is the place to be. And if you are feel a little thumb in your foot after eater your meal the bar area has a little area where you can get your grove on.

Nellie's Soulfood Restaurant & Bar has the best soulfood it taste just like the way my mother used to prepare her meals. You can eat it and not have to add any seasonings to it, it is just that good. My favorite meal is the short ribs, greens, rice/gravy, yams, and we can not forget the cornbread, you can not have greens and no cornbread. My goodness just thinking about it makes my mouth very watery. They give you more than enough, i can never eat all of my food, i always have some leftover for that late night snack. And you know what they say it always taste better the next day.

Pros: Take out is great
Cons: Call ahead there is always a lot of customers there.

I found this place quite by accident, though I only live a three minute drive away, finding out that my favorite bartender of all time from another venue, the fabulous Tommie, was there. Went by to say hello, had a huge dinner and found a new place to frequent.
My husband and I both ordered the seafood platter (comes with three sides as well) and were totally stuffed. The sides are basic southern fare (and being a transplanted southerner, much appreciated by me). You definitely get more than your money's worth and you will not leave hungry. The staff is friendly and you feel welcome, unlike more "upscale" places, where the wait staff acts as if they are doing you a favor.
The bar is nice and cozy, a casual, laid-back atrmosphere, and of course, you have Tommie taking care of you.
I highly recommend Nellie's for casual dining and for a few drinks after work or on the weekend.
Pros: GOOD FOOD, FRIENDLY STAFF, GREAT LITTLE BAR
Cons: A BIT HARD TO FIND IF YOU DON'T KNOW THE AREA

Nellies is the best soul food eatery that the Bay Area has ever seen. Better than southern cafe, waffle house, and Sweet poppys. The menu changes from day to day and you cant go wrong with with anything you order, except the canjun style spaghetti....not my favorite.. filled with chicken and shrimp....gross...now moving on to the hit list items. number one....A plate full of short ribs that fall off the bone. Actually all their meat falls off the bones. Ox tails, neck bones, roast beef, and the turkey wings are all to die for... Their sides are what really reels you in. The Yams, mac and cheese, and dressing are the best tasting sides in the world. Better than my moms or at least damn near close. I absolutley love Nellies. Nellies is a must go for anyone who loves good food.
Pros: quality and quantity, good parking, dine in wait not long
Cons: slow cashier, might run out of food, long wait for pick up

The liver and onions were unmatched. The sides that I ate: collards, green beans, sweet potato and black eyed peas were as good as they get. I ate the fried chicken cold and it passed the cold-fried-chicken test - that is, it was not greasy the next day - but instead was moist, crisp - near perfection. The corn bread - with a perfect balance of soft grainy corn inside and crunch outside is over-the-top delicious. The prices won't break you. The noisy atmosphere is conivial and welcoming.
