I have been going to this place for countless years now. They used to look a bit run down... But not too long ago had the storefront painted with scenes from well known books. It was a beautifully done job and makes the place look 1000 times more attractive and really catches your eye. Inside it's a cozy and inviting atmosphere. They have books from floor to ceiling on practically every subject and genre you can think of. When you first walk in they have a bargain book area with deeply discounted books (Ive never really found anything of much interest - but there is quite a bit to browse through.) I mostly go for my fantasy and sci-fi fix but have bought quite a few art books there as well. (Which I got at a phenominal deal considering how expensive art books are.) They have an area with couches where you can sit and read to your heart's content. (And they have to resident kitties who you can always catch snoozing on them - so cute!) They also have a small but fantastic collection of rare books for sale that they keep in a glass case. I love this place, it's the best used bookstore I've ever found in all the states I've lived in. The staff is helpful but can be a bit snobby. I've also sold my old books there (or resold ones I've bought from them.) You don't get the best prices for them, but I don't mind so much. The credit I do get just goes back into purchasing more books from them. I highly recommend The Iliad, it's a bookworm's dream and I can't imagine going anyplace else.

This book store is pretty cool - lots of used books - stacked up to the ceiling. It's a fun place to browse - the type of place you can spend hours in. Great location.

I stumbled across Iliad when I first moved to L.A. four years ago. I've moved from the valley and into Hollywood, but I still go there at least once a week to check out new books. I've yet to find a place that tops it. Aside from the great staff, the prices and selection are truly impressive. If I'm looking for something and they don't have it one week, chances are they will within the next month. Most used trade paperbacks range from $4-$8 in price, and the mass market ones in the back rooms are a couple of bucks. The atmosphere in Iliad is relaxing and inviting, with cats wandering around, endless shelves of books impeccably organized, and couches where you can sit and flip through a potential purchase. There's no better store in L.A.
Pros: great selection, great prices, friendly staff
Cons: none
