Love Zitomer. It is a hoity toity pharmacy that's been on the upper east side of Manhattan since 1950. Zitomer's is a shopping experience with three shopping floors to indulge yourself in. There's even a separate store just for pet essentials and luxury goods.
You can get all the basic drug store items, but the best stuff is all the trendy, hip, must-have items that are often featured in lifestyle magazines.
My favorite items include luxurious candles (Seda from France), bath and body (Bliss, Diptyke, The Thymes) and hair products (Frederic Fekkai, Kent hairbrushes). Zitomer also has products for kids, men, even pets. Fabulous accessories like handbags, hair clips, jewelry.
This is a great place to get gifts for your friends and family--something for everyone. Shop till you drop should be their motto.

If you want high end then this place is for you. They have a large selection of gorgeous tiles in all types of materials and textures, I was in love with the glass tiles they sold which looked so much better than other stores I had visited earlier that day.
The customer service is impeccable and they will help you find what you need or what to achieve in terms of looks. Worth stopping in to take a look around.

This little Tribeca pharmacy recently expanded and the interior is now much brighter and more spacious.
For a relatively small drugstore, they have a wide array of OTC medications, creams, cold/allergy pills, etc. and an area where they sell greeting cards and the more organic products like shampoos and creams.
My insurance allows me to fill prescriptions here at a reduced cost. The first time I went, I was a little nervous - it looked like someone's teenage daughter was in charge, and the pharmacy area seemed very small, but she was very on-the-ball, processed my prescription quickly, and, all-in-all, it was a much better experience than the long waits at CVS, and the random Duane Reade support.

Whenever I feel the need for new make-up, Sephora is the first place I turn to. The prices aren't always cheap but good make-up unfortunately never is. However, they do carry many a brand that won't break your bank if you feel the need to splurge on them.
Overall, their selection is amazing and they carry many a product exclusively. Personally, I'm a sucker for Urban Decay, Hard Candy and Sephora's own brand. Urban Decay's Shadow box is a particularly great buy. For $34 you get nine of the year's top selling eye shadows in an adorable palette. I have both editions and they're honestly the only shadows I really use.

Sephora is the best store (albeit most expensive) for makeup and perfumes. They carry nearly every line one can think of and more. The store allows people to try on every product before buying it, which ensures that one buys the right shade of foundation or the right eyeliner. The prices are high, but the products are high quality. You will not encounter generic drugstore brands at Sephora – only the best is available.

Not a big fan of department stores or drug stores when it comes to makeup.
I don't really like the atmosphere of the makeup counters at department stores (my only good experience was at Nordstrum), so I do usually end up at the drug store, but there, you can't really try things out and ask questions.
I think the 3rd option is a place like Sephora or Mac, which have store fronts in malls, and also carry things online.
I've had good experiences at both places--they tend to have people who know a lot about the products and you can try things out before you buy them. Because I usually stick with the same things, I like these stores because they encourage me to branch out a little and at least make me aware of the current trends (though I seldom seem to adopt them).
