Lobster Rolls 3/21/2006

Wow, you will find amazing lobster rolls at Mary's Fish Camp (based on availability because it sells out sometimes). Restaurant space is small and only has several tables. The seafood is so very fresh and it is not too pricey. I'd choose Mary's Fish Camp over Pearl Oyster Bar or Grand Central Oyster Bar anyday! Just get there early or go for lunch to avoid waits. more

Strange Little Sea Food Restaurant, Good Food, High Prices 12/28/2005

I tried two other times to get into this tiny Village seafood restaurant but never made it. Once, it was too crowded (always a good sign) and another, they were closed for a long holiday weekend. Today, third time was the charm. Their reputation is for great, fresh lobster roll so that's what I ordered. My wife and I drive to Cape Cod for lobster rolls so I know the difference between so so and amazing. These guys must have made a few trips up north because their version is pretty close to New England's best - with one exception, price. Lobster Roll here is $23 (an out of season rate, to be sure). The good stuff first - the meat was unadorned by anything except a few spices and mayo. It was served on a traditional white-bread roll and a limp leaf of lettuce. The taste and smell of the lobster was fresh and the texture was nearly perfect - could have been a little less cooked. Again, not bad for NYC. I ate every bit (except for the lettuce) so you know it was tasty. I ordered my dish with fries - shoestring style and hot from the fryer. It was a heaping serving but for $6, maybe a touch too expensive. And I ordered dessert - Vanilla pudding. The pudding was just OK (some of the banana slices were past their prime) but I have to admit to being spoiled by my friend's wife's "'nanna 'nilla" pudding - to die for! I washed this all down with two cokes at a buck fifty per (8 oz glasses). Had I opted for wine, it would have been $8 to $10 per glass. The guy next to me ordered ice tea. Clearly a better choice because it seems like it was a "bottom less" glass. The total came to over $45 for lobster roll, fries, 2 cokes and dessert, tax and tip. Wow! Had I had wine (single glass) the total would have been $50. Wow, wow! That's what I call a NYC lunch. more

Lobster Roll Made Me Sick 9/1/2005

I went here because I had read reviews about how fantastic the lobster rolls are. Let's just say the lobster roll did not sit well in my stomach. I had the worst case of indigestion of my life and was popping antacids for hours. I'll admit that the bread roll was good, but the lobster filling wasn't great at all. I don't get what the fuss is all about. I guess everyone can't love Mary's. more

Best Lobster Rolls in NY 8/16/2005

Ahhh, Mary's Fish Camp. A cute seafood shack located on a tree-lined street in the West Village. This is where celebrity neighbors (Sarah Jessica among others) and non-celebrities get their seafood fix. Especially those who love lobster and lobster rolls. Mary's has the best lobster rolls this side of Maine (Pearl's is a close second but Mary's had the edge). For this reason, the restaurant gets very busy and the wait times can be very long. There is a small wrap around bar where singles and couples can dine but it's worth it to wait for a table near the windows. The service is great and the kitchen is open so you can see your lunch/dinner being cooked up. Worth a visit. You'll be hooked. more
