The Apollo Theatre is legendary and a staple in the Harlem area of New York City. Probably most widely known for "Amateur Night at the Apollo" this theatre also brings in some wonderful, big-name entertainment. When we went, we had seats in the balcony -- and they were still pretty good. The theatre is not terribly fancy -- but the history is rich and it's definately worth a visit. It's a real gem in New York.

The legendary Apollo Theatre was built in 1914. Many famous artists including Duke Ellington, Sarah Vaughan, Aretha Franklin, and James Brown earned their recognition here. Wednesday's "Amateur Night at the Apollo" draws in young talents from all over the country. Dance Theatre of Harlem's 2001 and 2002 inaugural seasons, Whoopi Goldberg's one-woman show, and the Jazz Foundation of America's benefit, "A Great Night in Harlem", with Bill Cosby have all played at the Apollo Theater. The Apollo Theater is a Ticketmaste venue and tickets can be purchased via Ticketmaster. The theatre complies with the AMERICAN DISABILITIES ACT and have adequate arrangements for handicap access.
