The Lyceum was the first of the Broadway theaters to be designated with landmark status. Despite its dark interior, close inspection will reveal delightful details to architecture enthusiasts. No recent production has stayed at the Lyceum for an excessively longtime, but shows such as MORNING'S AT SEVEN and I AM MY OWN WIFE has received critical acclaim.
Assisted listening devices are available. The theater is on West 45th Street between 6th Avenue and the 7th Avenue/Broadway cross.

Why weather the crowds and prices of Broadway when you can see great, intelligent theater for less money and eat at better restaurants to boot!? Cherry Lane gives a platform for both new and established talent, Many greats got their start here. They need money and deserve your support. Located on adorable Commerce Street, this is a destination. Best shows I've seen here; Blown Sideways Through Life, Kiki and Herb, and a musical about women in group therapy.

Let's face it - if you are going to the Nederlander, you are going to see RENT. That is how it has been for nearly a decade and who knows when it will stop?
Don't get caught in Times Square traffic - this theater is on 41st Street 7th & 8th Avenues. I think that is the southernmost Broadway showhouse. You won't miss the neon "Hotel" sign reading "RENT". Come for the $20 lottery for the first 2 rows of tickets each night.

Shw's here aren't always successful or what you want them to be, but they are always interesting. A long-time part of the downtown arts scene, Jean Cocteau Rep, which is resident at the Bouwerie Lane Theatre, always casts great actors you've never heard of in classic shows. And while the theater could use a serious rennovation (especially the seats) it's a pleasant and historic environment in which to see a show.

The Imperial Theatre was built for large scale musicals and it shows. Not only is it a huge house (1,650 seats), but it was the 50th house the Shubert brothers built and has proven to be the crown jewel for the organization.
After years of LES MISERABLES success (there is a plaque on the sidewalk outside the box office door), Hugh Jackman brought in the crowds during his stint as Peter Allan in THE BOY FROM OZ before the newest hit DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS started production there.
For some, it will always be the Les Mis theater. With the Broadway royalty it brings in, it seems to have been appropriately named.

The Vineyard Theatre offers two wonderful things - 100% of the seats in the house are good seats & new plays/musicals! Located on the east side of Union Square, you can put together a lovely evening of dinner, a show and post-show drinks all within a couple of blocks.
I have sat in the first row and the last row and somewhere in between - I have never been disappointed in my view at the Vineyard. The theatre is positively spic & span clean. Hallways leading to the bathrooms display photos of past productions - you will probably have heard of more than one as many shows that start out at the Vineyard go on to Broadway or regional acclaim, as do many performers.
I highly recommend the Vineyard for a quality night of theatre.

If you head down Broadway from Columbus Circle, the first marqee you will see is for the Ed Sullivan Theater (home of the David Letterman show). The first theatrical marquee you will see will be the Broadway Theatre. Sure, no points for creativity in naming the venue but it is a great place to see a show.
It was built as a movie house, but today we are lucky to see large scale musicals such as BOMBAY DREAMS & THE COLOR PURPLE here as well as Baz Luhrmann's recent production of LA BOHEME. The audience is huge as is the stage. Prepare for spectacle!

A production should feel very lucky to be at the Winter Garden - it seems like it only hosts long running shows! This is of course due to two of its most recent tenants - Cats & Mamma Mia!, two of the longest running musicals in the history of the Great White Way. The Winter Garden is huge (lots of seats for lots of fans). Front mezzanine seats are my favorites here. The stage door is on 7th Avenue - find your favorite chorus member after the show and let them know how much you loved his/her dance numbers.

Meet up in Shubert Alley before hitting a show at the classic Shubert Theatre. The alley is a heck of a lot bigger than the tiny lobby! The Shubert is one of the big boys of Broadway with over 1500 seats. When I sat in the back row for Spamalot, I still could see & hear. Was it the production? Acoustics? Microphones? A combination? I'll never know, but the $35 was one of the best cheap seats I have ever sat in.
There are a limited number of bathrooms here - you may be competing with hundreds of others during a 10 minute intermission - so think before you drink.
