I would come here with my husband to eat sushi sometimes since we live in the neighborhood. We still believe in the optimal health benefits of fish!
Except the weekends, it does get lively with customers, but during the weekdays I feel quite comfortable going because it is not very crowded and so I dont have to squeeze myself to get around. And recently I have been noticing some changes with the sushi, and it isnt a bad change. I guess they are trying to test and trial still, but comparing with other Japanese restaurants we would visit, this place is my favorite becuase on top of being good, it is reasonable pricings. It gives me and my husband some money left in our pockets to explore other dishes in the menu. But we have tried most of the food in that restaurant now that I hope they would have more additions to the menu.

I tried Ariyoshi for the first time recently, and at first glance was pleased to see something resembling authentic Japanese food (on the menu). It went sour when I was served spoiled toro which i needed to discard immediately upon tasting it (full piece in mouth). There is no excuse for this at a sushi bar or any restaurant.

so i would visit here from time to time with my friends for lunch, and once or twice for dinner. i gotta say, it's a welcoming place to just come and eat lunch like you'd enter a little pizzeria and eat a slice. even coming alone. it might seem all fancy and yes it is decorative, but i really liked how it's very welcoming. and the ppl who work there are nice too. it does get a bit crowded and all sometimes. but i love the little amiyaki thing, it's like a personal barbeque and it looks elegant and not overwhelming and fresh. i guess it's a new recent thing added on but i love it, espcially the beef one. and just other random entrees me and my friends would like to experiment, and with all the blindfolding choices we'd do, it's always been pretty good, lol. and man, we looove the sparkling sake!
Pros: yum yum

Shame about the chef.
Perhaps there's been a change since our visit earlier this year. Let me clarify that the wait staff and sushi chefs were polite, professional and efficient. The food that we did get served was stellar. The problem seems to have been the tempermental chef or cook in the kitchen.
I wrote to the owner and did not get any response. This compelled me to set up a profile on this site for the express reason of sharing an excerpt from the letter with you ~
Attention: Mr. Kono, Owner
Dear Mr. Kono,
...Though I wish I was writing to tell you what a wonderful experience it was, I regret that it was quite the opposite. It is important for me to stress that the staff were delightful and the service was prompt, polite and professional.
After almost an hour from ordering and seeing everyone with sushi/sashimi orders being served, we inquired about our main courses.
Our waiter was very polite but we could sense he was struggling to tell us that he had no idea when to expect our main course. I did not want to press the issue and I reassured him I was not about to take my frustration out on him, but it seems you have a problematic chef on your hands.
He was not in the mood to cook. Can this really be true?
We unfortunately had to leave without our mains.
Pros: Sushi and Sashimi
Cons: Tempermental Cook in the kitchen

I've been to Ariyoshi a few times and I've never left disappointed. With a simple clean decor, attentive staff and yummy cheap eats, it is a great place to eat alone or with friends. The menu is both tapas and entree styled and always delicious (with the exception of the tuna tartare). From the colorful seaweed salad (3 different types), to the classic agedashi tofu, cheese croquettes and salmon teriyaki... it was all quite pleasing to the palette... AND it's so close to union square, though a bit of a hidden gem. You will enjoy it.
Pros: Yummy Food, Cheap Eats and Location
Cons: tuna tartare

the food was excellent. the service, seriously lacking. had we a different server this experience would have been great. we went on a friday night, four of us, at 9pm. no croud and we were seated right away. they have an extensive sake list, but my friends and i know nothing of sake. thankfully, the list explains everything you need to know. we ordered a couple rolls of sushi, one of which never came out until we had all finished eating and we still had to ask our waitress several times for it, which was not comped for its tardiness. she also served us the wrong drinks and gave us an extra appetizer which she charged for on the bill. we made a stink and they took it off, but it still never should have happened. also their timing in serving appetizers and then the meal was way off. basically everything came at once or didnt come at all. the waitress never came back to check on us and we had to flag someone down several times. still, the sushi was great, and moderately priced. it ranges from $5/6 to about $10/12 per roll. i would certainly come back if we had a different server.
Pros: great ambiance, location and food
Cons: horrendous service, but just one girl, the manager and bussers were attentive and polite

This place is always empty, so I was stunned at how good it was. For my full review, posted on April 12, 2007, please see: scoboco.blogspot

I came to this restaurant at least 2 or 3 times and it is the best place to eat cheap and yummy sushi! There's also a big place to sit with your whole family and friends. There is lots of drinks like soda and beer and more! It also have great decorations of cute little lights and nicely seated tables. The air inside would make you want to stay even more! There are desserts like fruit ice cream, cheesecake, and green tea ice cream too! when you go to the restroom, it is soooooo clean and the air is fresh! The waitresses are nice and will always be smiling. The sushi are pretty cheap in a place like main st. The appetizers are so good, you won't believe it! When you are done, you will be so happy that you went to the place! So,come on down to Ariyoshi!!
Pros: Great place to park and the service was good!
Cons: It's really good to eat in a place like this!!

Well, I have been there 3-4 times and it has always been a delight eating there. The atmosphere is comfortable with the lights dimmed, making me look nice and blemish free while with someone speicial. and the price is suprisingly affordable compared to other Japanese restaurants in NYC. The inside is gorgeous. I especially always enjoy the healthy wine selection, which i can get a glass of raspberry and/or pomegranate wine for $3.50 - $5, a great option for health conscious people. A glass of red wine a day keeps a doctor away! :-)
And the food is good, i love the variety of appetizers, all of which has a lot of volume. And the sushi itself is visually and tastfully pleasing. One last thing is that I wish they had my favorite tempura ice cream for dessert.
regardless, it's worth visiting. it's a friendly place to go with anybody. i doubt you'll experience any dissatisfaction really.
Pros: healthy options, food, wine
Cons: looks too gorgeously sophisticated, but looks can be decieving, it's actually very easy going.

I've tried quite a few Japanese places in the city since I've been here, but this one really stands out. The location is really convenient (obviously, Union Square) and the inside is gorgeous. The food is also great, I've never seen such a selection of tasty dishes. I always love sushi, but this place has much more to offer, it almost felt like tapas, which was great because I had some friends from Jersey visiting. They also have a bar and a big alcohol selection. All in all, the food was amazing, the ambiance was beautiful and my friends had a great time. Nothing more you could ask for. I saw that they offer bento lunch boxes, if only I could get down there for lunch...
Pros: Great food, location and ambience
Cons: None
