OK, so they have this fantastic collection of vinegar, cheese, oil etc. (And very pricey).
But - their service and food in the dining area is horrible! I went here for brunch with my mother. I ordered a smoked fish plate. The dining area is huge. We were one of about 3 tables at the time, i.e. - they were pretty empty. Nonetheless, I swear it took at least 30 minutes for us to get our food.
Once it was served, we didn't see a waiter again. My fish was average, not very flavorful, and I wanted some sauce with it to at least give it some taste.
After 10 minutes of seeing no one, I gave up, and picked at my food. No one offered water, coffee, or tea refills, so we decided on the check.
WE COULDN'T EVEN GET THAT! After another 15 minutes of waiting to ask them if I could pay for their lousy service, we gave up.
I walked up to the manager on the way out, told him we would not be paying for our meal, explained why, and he apologized.
I will never eat here again.

Some places talk gourmet, act gourmet, look gourmet...but are they really gourmet? This place IS gourmet, even though it might not look like it at first glance. This is a simple store with no semblance of decor and a sometimes surly staff who are extremely knowledgeable. But understand that the food here is what matters, nothing else.
It is definitely on a smaller scale compared to other food shops, but the produce, cheeses, and pastas here are unbelievable. Cuts of cured Italian meats will probably never make it to your fridge, as you'll be sneaking a slice here and a slice there, until it's gone by the time you get home.

This is a lovely place to go for semi-casual, semi-fancy meal with really good kosher food (or just good food in general - regardless of whether or not you're kosher!). I had the salmon and thought it was fantastic; I also enjoyed the appetizer, wine and desert - all around a very good meal! It's a bit expensive, but you can try to find a coupon on restaurant.com to make it cheaper.

Takashimaya is one of my wife Amy's favorite places in NY to shop. As a bonus, they have a great traditional Japanese tea house in the basement. The selection of teas is fantastic and extensive - if you are a green tea lover (like me) you can really go to town. The food is relatively inexpensive and very good. If you need a mid-afternoon snack or are a guy-non-shopper and want a diversion while your SO shops, it's a great place to plant with a book.

Schaller & Weber is an excellent speciality food store on the Upper East Side. In addition to excellent pork products (generally German/Austrian sausages, not Italian, and good cuts of ham) they carry a wide range of European grocery products, and with the recent demise of Elk Candy Co. are the best source in Manhattan for marizpan pigs for New Year's Eve.

Orwasher's is another old New York business. The family-owned bread bakery has been at the same Upper East Side location since 1916. While it no longer has sawdust on the floors (as it did in my own childhood) the bread is as fantastic today as it's always been. Because everything is baked fresh daily, it's best to get your bread in the morning, to asure the best quality and the softest rolls. I particularly recommend the onion pockets (in regular and jumbo size) and the raisin cinnamon bread. Wonderfully, their website provides photos and ingredients lists for all of their products. Not listed on teh site is their small selection of dessert items, that usually includes kosher choices as well.

Murray’s prides itself with sourcing the best cheese in the city. So its no surprise they also make fine sandwiches like the smoked mozzarella panini ($5.95). Basil, sun dried tomato and balsamic vinaigrette top sumptuous cheese from Joe’s Dairy. The chef then uses a panini press to melt the sandwich to perfection. Murray’s has an inviting bench out front of their shop for those who just can’t wait to dive in!
There's also a mind boggling selection of cheese to purchase by the pound.

Whether you are in Grand Central for your commute or live on the northern half of Manhattan and don't feel like trekking down to Bleecker Street, Murray's is a must-stop-shop in the food hall on the Lexington Avenue side of GCT. The staff is helpful and there is a wide variety (granted, not as big as the main shop on Bleecker, but it will probably serve your need) of cheeses to try. In addition, Murray's stocks nuts, yogurt, dried fruits, preserves and other good accompaniments to the cheese.
If you are not sure what you want, ask for a taste. Again, the staff is very helpful. If you ask for 4 ounces, you get 4. They don't push you, which is refreshing.

Where else but at Lunettes Et Chocolat can you find chocolate, jewelry and glasses all under one roof? Oh, that's right, no where. Sip some rich Mexican hot chocolate before looking over some frames by Michael Kors or Paul Smith.
Lunettes Et Chocolat is a unique one of a kind store that perfectly personifies NYC's diversity.
