On Third Avenue, Gracious Home is actually two stores -- one beautiful and spacious selling expensive furniture and lamps and so foth. The other cramped, and not as cheap as it should be, selling more basic household items from shower curtains to doorknobs to bath towels. Confusing and disorganized, neighborhood residents swear by it, but trips to KMart and Home Depot could net you the same stuff for less money.

Gracious Home knows a good market. They've become indispensable to the Upper East SIders who are constantly tweaking their living spaces.
The used to have free delivery (sadly that has gone the way of the dinosaurs), but they'll still delivery all of your goodies for a pretty cheap fee.
THe lighting section is inspiring and I love perusing the knobs and latches. THey have every cleaning supply know to man. Staff is brusque but efficient.
Great return policy.

This is a very upscale home furnishings store on the Upper East Side that is always eye-opening with each visit to the store. If you didn't think a bathtub was high on your list of home-based priorities, you haven't been here. Everything they offer is luxurious to the point of laughable, but always dreamy. If I ever need a $150 doorknob, I'll know to come here.
But like others have said, the customer service can't be beat. Despite the enormous layout of both stores situated across the avenue from each other, each associate knows exactly where each item is. You don't see that happening at Bed, Bath, and Beyond for sure.

Gracious Home has been around for ever and is an incredible resource for home decor - housewares, linens, bathroom items, lighting, and much more. The quality is good, the service tends to be very good, but the prices are very high. This is top end stuff and the prices reflect it, but if you shop around you can find at least some of these items on sale or at discount prices, especially on the Internet. Nevertheless, it's a great store to get ideas or to find out about new products that are out there. And if you have a fat wallet and don't care about getting the best price in town, then it is also an excellent place to purchase things for your home.

this place capitalizes on the fact that there isn't much competition in manhattan for household goods (although now that there's a bed bath and beyond a couple of blocks away maybe that will change) by trippling or even quadroupling the prices for everything it carried. ridiculously cramped little aisles, limited (at best) selection, and totally obnoxious salespeople (although that might be par for the new york course).

The premier store in the neighborhood for ages before Home Depot and Bed Bath & Beyond came to give them some competition. This upscale home decor store on the upper east side has expanded up and down and across the avenue to include lighting, luxurious sheets and towels, appliances as well as decorative hardware - where else can you choose from many different light switch platesand knobs, kitchenware, shades, uniquely designed contact paper, soaps and room sprays etc. etc. Beautiful Christmas ornaments. Prices are expensive and delivery and installation readily available.

Gracious Home may have best customer service of any store that I have ever been in. Now mind you, it's New York service. They're not exactly warm and cuddly. There are no Wal-Mart greeters here.
But everyone in the stores seems to know their stuff completely. They always have the answers to your questions. They have enough staff that you pretty much never have to wait. And they always seem to have what you need.
I can't imagine having a better home furnishings store nearby. Too bad they're largely wasted on me. I'm Jewish and live fully up to stereotype in the area of handiness.

What makes Gracious Home so good is that it's in a small space in Manhattan and it's for people living in small spaces in Manhattan. I found a whole dining room set that collapses into an occasional table about 10 inches wide. Downstairs they've got plenty of shelving and storage units for every room that hang on walls, fold up and generally get out of the way. Finally an inexpensive home furnishings store that isn't geared towards soccer moms from the suburbs and isn't in the suburbs.
