I have been knitting for many years, but Gotta Knit has made me a knitter! Gotta Knit has taught me the importance of checking one's gauge. They have encouraged me to try new stitches. I can actually create a garment, not just following a pre-printed pattern. I have made many beautiful garments for myself and others. (Not just socks!) Goldie has the patience of a saint when teaching. Laura is a genius at writing patterns and helping you turn a mental (or physical) picture into something that will actually fit and flatter, no matter what your body. They have yarns in a variety of prices to fit all garments and budgets. Gotta Knit is without a doubt, the best full service yarn store in NYC!
Pros: patterns, yarn, knowledge of knitting, hours
Cons: size

For my money, GOTTA KNIT has beautiful yarns (including many you can't find elsewhere), helpful staff, and FREE patterns, designed to fit me and the way I knit.
The new location (14 East 34 Street, Floor 5) is clean and bright. The big table in the center invites you to sit down and solve your knitting problems, or play with combinations of color and texture.
Pros: Unique items, high quality
Cons: small

Gotta Knit was a complete bust for me. The salesperson was condescending and acted like I barely understood the concept of knitting. For ex, she pointed out to me that I was looking at sock yarn. I replied, with a smile, that I was aware of that, and in fact I've knitted socks before. And then, she told me that if I was afraid of thin yarn, I could always knit it on larger needles. What? These one-sided conversations continued throughout my stay. I was about to blurt out that I have knitting designs published!
Their selection was very limited, and they did not carry the most commonly used yarns (Debbie Bliss, Cascade, Rowan, Karabella). They mostly sold expensive cashmere from obscure brands.
Even though this store is close to where I work, I do not anticipate to go back there.
Pros: ?
Cons: condescending, overpriced, small selection

I went to Gotta Knit with a serious knitting emergency. I'd found a mistake in the lace scarf I'm making, and tried to unravel a few rows, but only made the problem worse. The ladies at Gotta Knit not only fixed my scarf so I didn't lose my hard work, but were extremely patient and understanding.
I can't wait to take a class there! They have a beautiful selection of yarns, and amazing patterns for all levels of knitters.
Pros: Great Personal Attention

I've read with amazement the review that trashes the owners of this store. I live in Lake Tahoe and every time I come to New York, I visit Laura and Goldie. Since I am a knitter, and just starting out, I find their advice for my projects invaluable. I also like their assortment and their variety of yarn the is best.
Yes, they are a kniting store, and they say that up front...hence the name. But if you are looking for a place that will help you find a KNITTING project to your level of expertise and just the right yarn to use for it, got to GottaKnit!
You won't be disappointed...really!
Pros: Attention to deal, help with your projects, writes patterns for just your size and ability.
Cons: The store is NYC; I live in Tahoe.

I went to scope out the store a few days before a crochet class I was having for my friends. Same ugly cramped space with same ugly rude owner. The old location was the same, but this was the only store open in my area on the day I needed to go, so I was forced to not only give her my business and that of my 4 friends but to contend with the rude ugly attitude of the owner too. On my scouting visit, said owner was sat alone knitting something hideous as usual, I made small-talk to be polite and also to let her know that I wasn't a noob because she sizes you up like a dog and treats you as such if she thinks for a second you'll accept that behaviour, then busied myself poking around. Her eyes boring into my back following my every move while she breathed heavily made me uncomfortable. Every time I made an inquiry, I felt extremely unwelcome. I mentioned I had a group of beginner friends coming in in a few days for a crochet class and she snapped. In an abruptly condescending & snarly way she said well I'd better come early because this place gets packed in afternoons. #1 - I didn't ask. #2 - I already said we'd be coming in the afternoon and never gave the impression that was flexible. #3 - The place is always deserted. I've only ever seen 1 other customer while I was there in the history of my visits. On my second visit - we show up exactly as promised and not a single customer is seen leaving or entering during our whole trip. During it, she butted into my conversation with my friend and rudely contradicted what I was saying about a certain yarn. I ignored her tone and tried to understand what she was saying for my own education but she took it as a personal affront instead and argument instead. So, she's useless at teaching as well. Then as I went to put said yarn back properly, she berated me about messing up the yarn before I could explain that I was actually trying to put it back properly ! Note: Yarn stores are meant to provide knitting help besides the yarns
Pros: It has yarn
Cons: Bad service, heavily knitting biased and it shows in attitude and hook selection, pricey, no prices marked, ugly location, no ball winder, horrible knitting/crochet help.

Hey guys,
It seems as though Gotta Knit has moved. They are no longer on 6th ave, but are now on 34th Street between 5th and Madison right next to Staples. The new store looks great and they are on the fifth floor with an elevator, so no more stairs.

I would avoid this place. The owner was rude and the selection was small. Don't waste your time. Too much attitude and too little selection.

I like to visit many yarn shops when I travel so I'm used to all types. I can say that this one did not have an inviting feeling. I was greeted when I came in but I was never asked if I needed help finding anything. Thankfully I'm an experienced knitter and don't need much assistance. The inventory has a limited variety and nothing in the store is marked with a price. I won't shop at a store that doesn't list prices because it seems untrustworthy. As if they can change the price on a whim, based on the person they are selling it to. Out of curiosity I wanted to check their prices but the two women were engrossed in a conversation with a regular customer and it took awhile to get their attention. The prices were high and the staff unattentive, so I left. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone I know. There are better places.
Cons: high prices, poor service

When I walked into Gotta Knit two years ago to learn to knit, I had no idea what a gem I had stumbled upon. I found a yarn store that does so much more than just sell yarn. GK provides an amazing selection of luxury and other high quality yarns and SERVICE, SERVICE AND MORE SERVICE. When I say service, I mean everything from teaching you how to cast on to how to knit to knitting different stitch patterns. They write patterns for you (that actually fit), fix knitting screw ups (I have had my share) and find color combinations that are amazing (ones I would have never thought of myself). As well, the two owners are accomplished knitters who help other accomplished knitters (I am not one yet but I have witnessed many--knitter's envy). The YARNS: their cashmeres and mohairs are ABSOLUTELY delicious and their marinos and less expensive yarns are well-selected and edited. In addition, they have some great ideas for projects. You can find funky ones (check out the purple knit fur mittens on the wall...to die for!!!), felted and knit handbags as well as classic projects like hats, sweaters and baby blankets. You can even rip a page out of a fashion mag, bring it in and they will figure out how to make it! I have simply not found any other yarn store in NYC that has both the level of service and yarn selection that GK has.
Pros: Delicious yarn selection and amazing service
Cons: So many knitting ideas and too little time
