I trekked east to Dylan's Candy Bar one day and was really disappointed in what I found. Sure, (overpriced) candy abounds, but the place was overrun with people. Local kids squabbling at the soda fountain, tourists gawking... the smell of pure sugar made my headache and I chipped a tooth on a lollipop. Clearly I had a bad experience on this particular day, but I have to say, I've never been motivated to return.
I was also not impressed with the presentation. The logo is heavy and dark, I saw several chocolate items that had grown old (I used to work in movie theatre concessions, and if the chocolate gets old that means they're not rotating the stock often enough) or that had been smashed by patrons.
I think I really wanted Wonkaland... and I got Dylan's uber-business instead.

There is so much chocolate here it makes my teeth ache. The selection of jelly beans alone can send a diabetic into shock.
There's a old time soda fountain for sweet dates and a ton of candy by the pound (or ounce if you have some restraint). My favorite treat is the chocolate covered cookie dough clusters.

I finally just caught up with Dylan's Candy Bar. The greatest thing about it, i think is its selection of difficult to find or old-time candies. I was shocked at how many candy items I haven't seen since my childhood are on hand there. I don't think there is any other resource for many of them in New York City. The selection alone is worth the chaos of the swarms of sugar-drunk, stumbling, sticky children on the stairway between the store's two levels. Also, if you need to shop for the Harry Potter fan in your life, they have all the HP candies on the lower level.

If you like candy you will feel like you stepped into heaven when you step into this store. It's a very large, lively place that has every type of candy you can imagine. The first time I stepped into this place, I was blown away. They had candy that I haven't seen since I was a kid. I bought quite a few things. It's expensive though. This isn't the kind of store where you would come to buy your bulk Halloween candy. It's just for special treats. My son goes crazy when we go here.

Who out there doesn't want to visit Candyland? In my opinion, Dylan's Candy Bar is as close as you're going to get in this city - or any other, for that matter. Founded by Ralph Lauren's daughter Dylan, this place is designed for a fun time for all! Although it is fantastic for kids, its not just built for them. As an adult, I love going there and just losing myself in the energy of the place. Certainly, you can find cheaper candy elsewhere, but the magic of Dylan's isn't in the candy, its in the whole experience. If you are looking for a real treat, take the kids to Dylan's and let them loose. Tell them they can pick one type of candy. They'll have fun for hours picking out the perfect piece to enjoy later on. This place is every child's (and many adults') dream come true!
EDIT: Yes, Dylan's has a website: www.dylanscandybar.com, where you can order the candies if you can't make it in person. Enjoy!

Going to Dylan's candy shop is kind of like going to the Disneyland of candystores; it's really the magical experience that keeps you coming back for more. Definately not a place to go in search of economically priced candy; you can get cheaper candy by the pound just about anywhere in the city. With old school candies like Charleston Chews and Sugar Daddies, and a couple of unique-looking PEZ dispensers on display, Dylan's is the perfect place to window shop. Plus, on holidays or when a specific movie comes out, Dylan's decorates to the tee. I loved going when Willy Wonka was playing in the theaters because the whole shop was so cutely decorated.

I feel like I'm in Willy Wonka's chocolate factory everytime I'm here- they carry every kind of candy imaginable in all sorts of shapes/flavors/colors- makes me weak. But Dylan's is also a massive tourist attraction site and it can get incredibly crowded. Yet it's a great place to get something sweet for a lover, a friend, or for yourself :) Neat packing.

Dylan's Candy Bar is an adventure in pricey and brightly colored candy. It is a two-floor child and adult sweet wonderland. Everything is cute and attractive to see and eat and it's hard to go in without buying something. The top floor is for cute custom gifts and make your own box of candy. Downstairs is candy-themes gifts and multicolored m&ms. It's a lot of fun just to walk around in awe.

Dylan's has all those candies you grew up loving. they also have bulk bins of the candies you love today. The music is cute and the decor is great. Stop in for a treat. Make sure you check out the steps filled with candy that lead down to the basement level. They also have a "cafe" on the Third Avenue side where you can order ice cream and baked goods and there's a party room for birthdays and other celebrations.
