I can get a meal here for about $5 (including tax and tip) and have food left over on my plate because the portions are so huge. The service is lacking, this is definitely not disputable, but it's well worth the scorn of an eastern european waitress to try the Dojo dip, Hijiki salas. My favorite is the soy burger dinner delux. Only $3.75 and sooo good. The ginger sauce is great too. They not only have asian cuisine, but a nice mixture of more traditional American food too. Oh, and Dojo West (4th St.) is better than Dojo East (St. Mark's)

Dojo is what you call a cool hip restuarant. And what's best is that it's for everyone! There are some very delicious veggie dishes, but the meat lover will be deeply satisfied! The prices are relatively low to the other places in the area. They serve breakfast until 5pm. I had dish that included two eggs, steak, fries (the potato shaped kind), and bread for 4.95. I was full and satisfied. I really liked those eggs (sunny-side-up. They don't call them eggs benedict)
Service can be smashing! (Depending which waiter you get during what shift) I recommend early afternoons (but I forget which day... i'll check it out). This Dojo is situated at a great spot! The one by St Marks is great too... but sorta sketchy.
edit: I think the you may get a smashing waitress if you're seated by the windows.

At Dojo you can get a terrific veggie burger plate, with salad and rice or fries, for $5.25. It's a very vegetarian friendly place, with lots of tofu and miso and a vaguely Asian/hippie menu. Brown rice, ginger sauce, that sort of thing. The food is enormously comforting, the salads are fresh and cheap, and everyone packs in at the wooden tables to feed and gab and study. Pay up at the bar, don't wait for a waitress to cash you out.

Consider this a nice, bare minimum restaurant with pretty decent, cheap food. If you live close by, it's a good place to go when you've been aching to get out but it's pouring rain outside and you don't want to go much further. It's also good when you don't have a lot of money to spend on dinner, but still want to get something that feels like a real meal (e.g., their seafood dish is somewhat suspicious, but plentiful, hearty, and I've never goten ill).

I'd have to say the atmoshpere is quite something at Dojo. It's quite classy, but the food isn't as expensive, unlike the restuarants int he area. It's a great spot for college kids and the salads are really really good. The service has gone down ever since someone I knew quit.. but you eat food, not service. Not to generalize though, some people are really friendly there.
edit: I meant this to be the Dojo at St. Marks.

I guarantee that in this neighborhood, you will not find a cheaper restaurant, except maybe Le Basket - but that's not really a restaurant. Breakfast all day (at least till 5:00) for under $4. The sandwiches are also pretty good and cheap - not quite as cheap as the breakfast, but if you feel like going out and do not want to be spending a lot, go here.

This restaurant is CASH only. I would say it's the best place to go for a meal alone. There is plenty of seating, although the tables are a bit too close together. The food runs at NJ Diner rates, and they carry a large selection of vegetarian products.
My favorite item is the Hijiki Tofu Patty, which is a ball of tofu with seaweed throughout that is fried and served with a Japanese BBQ sauce and a small salad for about $4.

One of the reasons most people come to Dojo is because of their dressing on their salads. I believe its ginger dressing, but other Japanese restaurants doesn't measure up to theirs. I'm not sure what it is, but it's nice and tangy the right combination. They also offer soy burgers, grilled sandwiches, and entrées such as steak, teriyaki, and salmon. I would recommend their sandwiches. The price is not steep and cheap. Good for local students around the area.
