The prices are higher than take-out obviously but much lower than some of the really expensive nyc restuarants. Very good service.

I don't go to Virgil's for the bbq (although I enjoy it, the addition of Dinosaur to the island of Manhattan has found me trekking way up north for real bbq fires) - I go for everything else. The BBQ salad is actually one of the most fabulous things I have ever eaten - I also feel like I will never want to eat again after finishing one. The corn bread makes my mouth water in anticipation. My "Virgil's Group" of friends always claims there will be no dessert, but we buckle and split one because even though we are stuffed, the desserts are so darn good. Peanut butter pie? Yum. Cobbler? Irresistible. We usually come at about 8:15pm after all the pre-theatre crowd has up and left.

The "best" southern food...I dont really think so...its adequate enough for sure. The ribs are good...not great. I have tasted better. The chicken is good and so is the mac and cheese which tastes like it was baked so I get a craving for that once and a while. Also I dont really understand the hype about the BBQ sauce...its average to me and not as flavorful as others I have tried but it sells out by the night's end. The atmosphere is always bustling and crowded and there is always a wait to get in. The interior looks like a lodge with almost everything made from wood. The downstairs dining area has a retro feel to it while the upstairs has log trimmings in every corner. Good to try...food is better than most places around Times Square...just not the best.

Virgils is another well known city spot. I really can't say that I was "head over heels" for their food, but I did find it enjoyable. The place is very well set, and I did enjoy my time there, but really can't say that I was blown away by their food. It was pretty much all standard fare. Maybe I just went on the wrong day, but either way this place only gets passing marks from me.

Virgil's is the best Southern BBQ in NYC. There are a lot of BBQ's popping up in NYC, but Virgils is the most authentic. Great stick to your ribs Southern Comfort Food! Try the Hush Puppies or Biscuits with gravy. There Memphis Ribs are the BEST and are so tender they fall off the bone as soon as you pick them up. They use real smoked wood to flavor not artificial smoke the others use in NYC.

At virgil's you're gonna get stuffed from the get go. I'd suggest not eating for the day and wait till the evening. My recommendation are definitely the ribs, but usually i can never finish them, so getting the rib and chicken combo usually does the trick for me. Add a side order of mashed potatoes with a lot of gravy and mac and cheese and you're all set! The atmosphere reminds me of what you would see in a texan movie. It's loud, noisy, and fast. The wait staff is a bit slow at times, especially when you're dying for water after putting the hot and spicy barbeque sauce on those juicy ribs. Overall, good family fun, as they have small and larger tables if the whole gang wants to go out and eat.
