It was really crowded, but the food was good. It took some time to get the waiter's attention to get the check. We paid and left over 20% tip in cash on the table. As we left, pushing through the people coming in, THE WAITER CHASED US DOWN TO TELL US THAT THE CHECK DOESN'T INCLUDE TIP. We had to tell him that the tip was on the table in front of at least 5 people. I will never go back to that restaurant again. No one deserves that kind of humiliation.
Cons: terrible service, crowded

I love this restaurant. It has the best soup dumplings EVER. I have gone to other restaurants that also have soup dumplings but they can't compare to the ones at Joe's. The Scallion pancakes, and any noodles dishes are delicious. i always walk out full satisfied and full.
But be prepared for a long wait, especially if you decide to go during the busy lunch or dinner hours. I have waited over 2 hours for a table once. I find the staff service okay. Some are more friendly and polite then others. Sometimes you feel rushed because they are trying to get you in and out quickly to serve the next group of people wait. But the food is so good.. Who cares?

First of all, let me say that Dew22's review is laughable. He probably pissed off one of the Chinese waiters and asked for Americanized food like chicken strips. This is the place to come for an authentic experience. Get a few orders of Soup Dumplings and try out the Lion's Head dish. It's outstanding and well worth the wait.
Pros: Quick Service, CHEAP, Soup Dumplings
Cons: Wait Time (worth it)

I was actually excited about jury duty so I can eat here every day.
The reputation made my mouth water, but I was very, very disappointed. The dumplings are okay but it is just not that special. The other food besides the dumplings was inedible, worse then your average Chinatown food.

Joe's soup dumplings are indeed delicious and legendary and are worth a visit just to eat this delicacy. However, the rest of the extensive menu is largely average. Any chicken dish will feature dry, boneless, skinless chicken breast meat that one would encounter in any Chinese restaurant in greater Iowa. Joe's also likes to pour goopy sauces on all of their dishes so if you are watching either your fat or sodium intake, ask for it on the side.
Joe's legend is still alive so a wait is likely. Expect to dine at one of the large round communal tables seated next to other strangers eagerly awaiting a taste of Joe's legendary soup dumplings.
Pros: soup dumplings
Cons: likely wait, average Chinese menu

At dinnertime, the place is in a state of utter chaos, with not enough space for those waiting for a table. The buns are worth it, though.
Pros: buns, price
Cons: crowded, chaotic
