Me and my boyfriend were visiting from SF and I was excited to go there for the buns. However the ones we had that day had skins that were way too thick and the filling was pretty tasteless. We also ordered the braised pork shoulders, the eel, and the double-side fried noodles and they were all below average. I was quite disappointed and actually remember the food being better the last time I came to NY.
Pros: Fast service, reasonably priced
Cons: average food for its hype

Joe's Shanghai is alright; it's not great and there are definately better places to get your Shanghai fix in Chinatown. However, one thing Joe's Shanghai does have going for it is that all the tourists and Chinatown visiters seem to make a pit-stop there. The wait staff is very nice and accomodating (they have chopsticks that are rubberbanded together so that it will be easier for children and non-Asians to use) of their customers. The food isn't really cheap, but once people give it a try, they usually go back.

Staff is indifferent to your business. Curt service. The typical looking, old, dirty, chinatown restaurant but THE DUMPLINGS are the best!!! The seafood pork dumplings are the only reason to go there. The rest of the menu is not stellar. Also, usually you have to share a table with ten people as there are only a few coveted non-communal tables
Pros: cheap

Like most Chinese restaurants in Chinatown Joe's Shanghai Restaurant is often packed during lunch time. You might have to wait a little while before you are seated or you might be asked to share a table with strangers. Once you get seated order the soup dumplings right away as it takes a while for them to cook it up fresh. So worth it though as they are delicious.

Joe's Shanghai is actually very filling. My girl friends and I often go after school to relax and enjoy some hot, tasty soup dumplings. Service is quick and to-the-point. There isn't nearly enough seating to accomodate the customers, so you might have to share a table. The price is definitely within everyone's range.
