I'll assume you know about the "discreet location", but the food is not conventional Japanese. There's a large choice of tapas style dishes so this is a good place for "snacks" but one can easily make a meal of it too, as we did. The food quality ranges from good to excellent, and should provide choices for even those looking for more conventional food. After reading reviews here, I was bracing myself for a hefty bill, especially knowing what some upscale Japanese restaurants can charge in Manhattan, but it's actually quite reasonable. Despite being in midtown, the place didn't really start filling up until after 7pm, and when we left it was packed so you may want to make a resv'n as it looks like even the bar seating was reserved. Net-net, I'd go again.

I was actually in this building with my husband when I saw the sign for a Japanese restaurant I am not into the raw food but my husband is. We had a delightful dinner and my husband was very pleased with the service. He thought it was a strange location, in the basement, but the food and atmosphere was great. We will stop by when we are in the area again.

It's still a must try if you haven't tried it yet. My favorite dish is the Sake Ikura Don...
Pros: Fresh Food, Small Plates Good For Sharing
Cons: Hard To Get In Without A Reservation

This is the place we dine with my husband's Japanese family on special occasions. It is truly authentic, and as such, you MUST allow a minimum of 2 1/2 hours or so for your meal... it is meant to be a slow-paced, relaxing, enjoyable experience, and not a place to go wolf down some chow. Try the beef negimaki, the abalone sashimi, and the black sesame creme brule for desert! Even simple, homey food like karaage and agedashi tofu are elevated to a fine art. The service is attentive and knowledgeable; you will be pampered by some of the best waitstaff in New York City, in my humble opinion. It is not cheap, and it is not fast food, but I promise one of the best dining experiences you've ever had. We are loyal customers!
Pros: perfection!
Cons: your wallet will feel lighter when you exit

my friends and i went for their wide selection of sakes and fell in love with not only that but also the food. when it came to the service, it was like being back in tokyo. the soft-spoken staffpeople are patient and knowledgeable, explaining each dish (and at times how to eat it) as it was placed in front of us. most of the food comes in smaller portions (asian tapas-style) which is a perfect way to enjoy all of the delicious dishes they have on their menu. this is definitely the kind of place i would go to impress a date or client.
Pros: Good food and drink, romantic and upscale, staff very polite
Cons: On the pricey side

We love this place and are now regulars. Never have the same sake twice, try the chicken meatballs, blackened cod, and riceballs. If you are more daring, there are a vast number of dishes with squid, octopus, and other creatures with many legs. There is something for everyone here. Even if you don't think you love Japanese, you will find something delicious on their menu.
Service varies depending on whose section your seated in, but the atmosphere is unique and soothing, the food is always excellent, and we always have a wonderful time here.
Plus, if they ever make a mistake or if it's a holiday, they usually throw in a little dessert sake on the house.
This is one of our favorite places in New York
Pros: great food, extensive sake menu, great atmosphere
Cons: Sometimes slower service, but it's worth waiting for!

Great expectations and was not disappointed; truly one of the city's best secrets. The food was amazing, with the specials menu shining.
Excellent service, waiter brought complimentary tastes of different sakes when challenged for something unusual and the food arrived promptly as we finished each set of dishes. This isn't a place to go for a quick bite, but rather a pleasantly paced evening - we spent 2.5 hrs. Dishes are small at ~$10 each, and sake can get expensive.
Pros: Food, Service, Sake options
Cons: Price, reservations req'd

if you are a big sake drinker, this is a restaurant you must check out. they have a huge variety of sakes and on some occasions have sake tasting nights. (you can ask the waiters for sake tasting schedules). nice decor and also excellent japanese dishes to compliment the sake. dessert was also great! a bit expensive though because the dishes are small and you need to order several dishes to be full.
