sakagura 3/23/2006

if you are a big sake drinker, this is a restaurant you must check out. they have a huge variety of sakes and on some occasions have sake tasting nights. (you can ask the waiters for sake tasting schedules). nice decor and also excellent japanese dishes to compliment the sake. dessert was also great! a bit expensive though because the dishes are small and you need to order several dishes to be full. more

A personal Fav 12/29/2005

There are a few places in NY that end up on my constant rotation. This is one! The Sake is great the service good and the food tasty. Best of all it is consistent. You know you are going to have a good time. It is a bit like taking a mini vacation. It is isolated from the outside world and you can forget you are in NYC for a little while. more

Good Sake and Good Food 4/1/2005

This is a "secret" place as many of the sake restaurants seem to be -- it is hidden in the basement of an office building. You've got to walk into an office building past the security guard, walk down the stairs (not a grand set but the kind you'd use in the event of a fire) and voila (or whatever equivalent word is in Japanese), you are met with a tranquil setting where you can sample hundreds of sake. There is a tasty menu as well but since this is a sake place, the dishes are small appetizer/tapas style that you order to share with the table. They have flights of sake if you're into experimentation. On weekend nights, it's hard to get in without a reseravation. more

  • In Short
Enter through the corporate lobby, follow a small gold sign that points down an industrial stairwell and you'll happen upon a subterranean sake lounge with a highly loyal following. American jazz is the music of choice, but the decor is pure Japanese minimal, all bamboo plants and paper lanterns. There's an extensive sake menu and the dinner menu offers sashimi (no sushi), as well as a range of less familiar Japanese dishes.
