Today, I ordered a hot chocolate (added my own sugar as it is old school hc and not sweet at all) and a raspberry linzer cookie. I am going to skip the cookie next time and try one of their struedels or cream puffs -- they look fantastic. $4 was a decent price for a very large cookie and a made to order hc (no packets!).
I am not a communal table person. Sadly, that is what the Hungarian Pastry Shop has to offer. When possible, I get my goods to go and sit across the street at the Cathedral. One plus is that if you come in on a weekday afternoon, you might be able to sit at a table with only one other person. Unfortunately, he may be annoyed you sat down there.

Amazing coffee, amazing pastries, amazing place to study, what more could you want? I frequent HPS every time I am in the city. You can sit outside if its warm, and its right accross the street from the Cathedral, so its quite nice! Its frequented by students and professors, I've even heard of Columbia professors who hold office hours at HPS! I reccomend a cappucino and a chocolate croissant. if you eat there, they will heat up the croissant for you. They have a wide variety of delicous pastries and cookies. Either order to go, or order and they will bring it to you. You can go next door to P&W for a delicious sandwich which you can enjoy in HPS, but don't bring any other food in there, they will not allow it. It can be busy and hard to find a seat when the colleges in the area are in session.
