E J's is a nice place - I prefer the Barking Dog, but it's good, has a nice selection and often has good specials. There is a nice greenhouse-type seating space that feels kind of like outside. It's a pleasant dining experience, it's usually busy, but the service is pretty good. The menu is very large. The ambiance is that of a crowded NYC restaurant. It's fine. The prices are reasonable.

Trendy yuppie diner serving delicious food - different dinner blue plate special daily. Tuna melt, halibut, home style mashed potatoes are highly recommended. Granny smith chopped chicken salad is awesome! Avoid the limp french fries. Otherwise, food is well prepared and tasty. Friendly attentive staff. Delivery available. Weekends and dinner time is always busy as well as weekend brunch.

Sunday brunch, breakfast, lunch and dinner ...
bring the kids. EJ's is one of the few "true" family
restaurants in Manhattan. Be prepared to wait on line ... they don't takre reservations. And be prepared for a little noise .. after all, kids will be kids. But also be prepared for very good diner food
and very friendly service.

On a 2 day trip to New York many years ago, I was meeting three different friends for three different meals (lunch, a late night dinner, and brunch). Since I was the visitor, I let them suggest the place: my only criteria were that it had to be good, affordable to someone on a tight budget, and convenient to where I was staying on the Upper West Side.
As it turned, each of the three friends independently suggested E.J.'s, and I happily went along each time. And now that I live on the Upper East Side, I frequent the East Side version, which is pretty much exactly the same.
E.J.'s is a diner that serves diner food that is a cut above what you will typically find (but at prices that are only slightly higher).
