My family spent last week in NYC. My wife joined friends at Gotham Bar and Grill on night for dinner. This is one of those restaurants that everyone we know in NY recommends. It quickly became clear why.
Gotham Bar and Grill is a good sized place, and the tables are a little close together. Once you get settled, though, the experience is outstanding. We were never rushed. Service was prompt. Our server (who, it turns out, grew up in Seattle) was very knowledgeable and helpful. The food was great. The wine list strong...all in all a great dining experience.
The menu was nice and diverse. It included fish, fowl, meat, and vegetarian. Appetizers ranged from cold soup (it was summer in NY) to salad, froie gras to duck confit. In other words, there was something for everyone. The daily specials are largely market driven, and included a halibut that my wife had raved about.
The dessert menu was large, and very good. The big hit at our table was the rhubarb cobbler.
The wine list was extensive, broken down by country and region. They had a good by the glass selection. The only knock was that it was very expensive. There were Washington wines going for 5-10x what I get them for at retail. By the way, we settled on a 2003 Lemelson Pinot Noir (Thea's Vineyard) from Oregon that was so good we had it again at another restaurant a couple nights later.
I've eaten in a lot of restaurants in NYC over the years and there are a small number I recommend. This one went right near the top.

I can't afford this place, but I went during Restaurant Week. One of the better restaurants that lives to the hype. I've tried other high-end restaurants, and I didn't think they were all-that. But Gotham really lived up to the hype.
It's a business class type restaurant, a lot of people in suits and dressed to the nines. The service is impeccable and they really look to make sure you are taken care of.
The food had flavor, taste and it melts in your mouth-goodness. The portions are middling, but it was just right - because for an appetizer, entrée and dessert, I was full.
Pros: Great food, just be willing to pay for it
Cons: Kind of stuffy atmosphere. Afraid I would be using the wrong utensils

The manager was cold and rude from the minute we walked in. She proceeded to get only worse as she hustled us out of our table when it was obvious they neither needed the table nor were closing anytime soon. Once outside and in front to hail a cab, the manager and hostess gossiped about us and then glared at us. I will never go back here ever. I have never been treated worse at any restaurant, let alone one where you're dropping $200 a person.
Pros: Leaving there
Cons: Manger, Manager, Hostess

Dinner is first class all the way. Everything was fabulous from the wine to the food to the ambiance. The service was top shelf and the level of attention that we received went above and beyond the call. This is a great place to have dinner or even just for drinks. Parking is ample; the location is great if you are in LM.

The food here is fabulous. However, when I spend that much money on a meal, I expect an experience that includes top-notch service. Yes, the server was courteous, but made absolutely no attempt to connect with our table of 4. Everything the wait staff did was very mechanical -- as one reviewer mentioned, no smiles and no sincerity. The minute we finished our first bottle of wine, she asked, "Should I bring another?" in a way that seemed more fitting for a restaurant less successful.
I would be willing to give Gotham another chance, but I'd much rather spend my money at Union Square Cafe, where the ambience, service, and food were much, much better.
Pros: Food
Cons: Service, Crowded, Loud

Gotham's food is fabulous, 98% of the time. I've been there on numerous occasions and with the exception of a recent disappointment (ordered the duck and the dish came cold to the table, so I had to send it back), the food is always excellent. The service is efficient, but mechanical. There is not an ounce of warmth or sincerity in the wait staff. They are simply doing their job, which five years ago would have been just fine. But dining today is a multi-sensorial experience and the staff's attitude plays a huge part in that. They should try to smile every so often and mean it.
Pros: great food
Cons: cold staff, mechanical service

2 part review. Food was off the charts. Loved it all. 4 of us went for dinner on a Tuesday. seafood, steak, dessert all wonderful in presentation and taste. Go for the food!! The wine guy was horrible. He talked down to us, when we could even get his attention. Felt like a beggar on 5th Ave talking to him. Have a drink or soda and stay away from the wine!
Pros: food, ambiance, desserts
Cons: wine, wine, wine
