Having tried to get reservations here for several months now since Alfred Portale's recent "Most Outstanding Chef" award from the JBF, I finally lucked out and snagged a Sunday 9pm table for four. The space is simple, but striking at the same time. Hostess, servers, bussers--all staff were very attentive and pleasant. Other guests seemed fairly stuffy and we did wait several minutes longer than usual to be given menus, but no negatives other than that. A perfectly lemony Lobster & Black Truffel Risotto was phenomenal, gezpacho was made very tasty by the inclusion of roasted peppers and avocado, Barbecue Spiced Muscovy Duck done exactly medium-rare and was as spicy and savory as I had hoped for. Miso Cod was much more brightly flavored than, yes, even Nobu's. Plum Souflee was nice, though paled in comparison to a well-contructed version of a S'more served as a graham cracker crust based tart. Presentation on all platings were extremely impressive as well. This was a truly fine dining experience all around.
Pros: Food, presentation, service, staff, etc...
Cons: maybe some snooty diners, but not Gotham's fault.

Gotham has set a standard of excellence which is tough to match in NYC. First impression is reminiscent of the Powerbroker eighties with its high arching doorway, and open well lit airy room. An atmosphere which says "Look at me"...(good tip. You will be noticed, so be comfortable with how you look). The arwork is a fabulous mix of old and new photography, sometimes subtle, sometimes bold, with a theme which is uniquely NYC. The Maitre d' is helpful, warm and professional. I have gone in when there has been a wait for a table longer than expected, and they are always quick to bring to your attention they have not forgotten you. If one has to wait a bit for a table, the bar is huge and perfect for pre-dinner conversation as it is never too loud. The "90 foot" ceilings help keep the chatter to a soft hum. The food is excellent. Upon last visit I had the Tuna tartare which was excellent. A bit of an Asian flair with hints of sesame and ginger worked perfectly. My second course was the Porcini mushroom soup which is ladled at the table, and so wonderful that I do not have the words to describe. It is served with goat cheese and pancetta and is a meal in itself. For the main course I had the steak served with a stack of Crispy thick onion rings and hearty bordelaise sauce. The steak was a perfect medium rare and served warm. For dessert order the chocolate cake. The only thing which was even a slight problem to an otherwise perfect experience was they didn't have the wine we ordered. But that was made up for immediately when the Sommelier apologized personally, and picked out a perfect substitute. Lynch-Bages. Upon re-presenting the wine list, I noticed that the wine we ordered was ALREADY taken off. Impressive. You will not be disappointed. Always perfect attentive service. If looking to impress a client or date, this is as close as it gets to a sure thing. I will certainly be back.
Pros: Food, wine, service.
Cons: Don't visit for dinner if on a tight budget.

Every time I have been here, the food and service have been exceptional. While all of the food is delicious, I highly recommend the chocolate cake.

The place was an excellent place for lunch - my friends and I had the pre-fixe lunch menu. The service was great and the waiter made sure we always had fresh bread to eat. I definitely would like to come back for dinner.
The atmosphere was key - not stuffy, very relaxing and enjoyable. The waitress did not rush us to leave even tho it was crowded. We could have stayed there for hours drinking tea and coffee.
Highly recommended for special occassions.
Pros: Ambience, Service, Food
Cons: Price, but you know what you're paying for

I took my b/f of 4 years here for his birthday. It was beautiful. Everything from the food to the service was incredible. All I had to do was raise my hand and a waiter was there to serve us. The food was fantastic and worth every penny, I had the house special..yummy pasta and he had a wonderful large NY steak, it was the best of the best. Even if you don't order desert, there are these little nibblets that come out for you to snack on. I would definetly go back just to eat at this restaurant again.
Pros: Fast Service, professional Staff, great chef...wonderful food
Cons: Go there to spend money...It's worth the price

What a goooooorgeous restaurant! I had lunch there today and was immediately so impressed with the ambiance... Lots of businesspeople in suits and a very classy crowd. The service was fantastic... very attentive and they all truly seemed to want you to have a perfect experience there. I got the $24 prix fixe, which was an absolute STEAL! The asparagus salad was fantastic, the mahi mahi literally melted in my mouth, and the warm flourless chocolate cake with mango sorbet was phenomenal. If you don't want to spend $70+ on a dinner, the lunch prix fixe is a great way to try the cuisine without dropping all the money, and I was perfectly satisfied with the lunch. Truly an outstanding restaurant.
Pros: EXCELLENT food, service, and ambiance... prix fixe is a steal!
