It's definitely not one of those uber-trendy or high-end Japanese places. If that is more to your liking then stick with Nobu or the other sushi places in that neighborhood. Howe...

great sushi, nice location 8/8/2006

Last night, I broke the cardinal rule of sushi, and ate it on a Monday night. I was happy to see that plenty of other diners were joining me on this quaint Irving Street corner, after 9pm. Choshi offers both indoor and outdoor seating, and if you go during peak hours (basically Thursday - Saturday dinnertime) you'll have to wait. This is definitely a neighborhood favorite. Inside, it's fairly small, but somehow, I never feel too close to table next to mine since the seating somehow affords a bit of privacy. Service is great - the waiters check on you, make sure you have what you need, and that it is to your liking. The house salad is one of the best in the city - it's huge, has a tangy dressing (not the typical ginger one) and, in this heat, will almost fill you up for $4. If you like oshinko (Japanese pickles) this is a good place to get them. I had their veggie roll - they added gobo - the pickle that looks like a small carrot - and it tasted delicious. Even on a Monday, the sushi was fresh, and delicious, and I will continue to return. more
