Nobu Next Door is the reservation-free version of Nobu. You can't get the chef's tasting menu here, but the sushi is just as fine, as are the cooked dishes. It's louder and more relaxed, and if you go on and off night, not impossible to get a table. In addition to the sushi try their cold soba noodles -- it's a standard dish, but I've never had it better.

On a recent trip to Next Door Nobu (a place I prefer as I come for the food, not the assumed exclusivity), I was one of very few diners. Of course, this was during a blizzard. About 30% of the patrons could not legally order a sake.
This says more about the changing tide of Manhattan than anything I guess, but I don't like eating a $250 meal surrounded by middle schoolers. I think I will have to find a new sushi place.
The food was great -- I am a big fan of the cod & the ponzu rock shrimp tempura. One note if you order an omakase menu - you get a lot of food, so come hungry.
