we went for dinner at Red Cat with friends last night. It took us more than an hour to get a table just in front of the kitchen door and another hour before the food was served. My husband ordered skate wing and I had the risotto. Both were too salty and overspiced. My husband mentioned that the fish was not tasting very fresh, yet he didn't return it. As soon as he got home (about two hours after dinner), he started threw up everything until he had a severe stomach cramp, it was an expensive bad dinner!

The Red Cat offered a perfect dining experience. The specialty cocktails were delicious, service attentive but not overbearing, menu was eclectic and food was superb. My date and I shared the sauteed frois gras, prune stuffed grilled quail and peppery arugula and shaved parmesean cheese salad as appetizers. Then we had the striped bass special along with the duck breast with wine demi-glaze. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal and this restaurant focuses on just the right things.
Pros: Deletable food, unpretentious yet classy

My wife, step-daughter and I live in Scotland and we were on holiday last week in New York. We visited this restaurant on a Tuesday night around 6.30pm. I was glad to have reserved a table as the place was full. We were allocated a really good table on the mezzanine floor about three-quarters of the way down the restaurant. This allowed us to have a good view of the entire restaurant and bar area.
The restaurant had a wonderful buzz to it. It was busy, but the noise generated was not too loud.
The food was excellent. Our favourite appetizer was the zucchini which is not common in restaurants back home, and it was good for sharing. In appearance it looks like a large plate of chopped cucumber, but is delicious when tasted. The bass was our favourite entree which was moist and not over cooked. For dessert the chocolate bread pudding was light and fluffy.
For drinks my wife and I had a decent bottle of syrah. My step-daughter prefers white wine and the waiter was extremely helpful in enabling her to choose a wine that was available by the glass.
There was a large number of staff working on the night of our meal. The service was superb with no hint of attitude. The waiters were attentive but not intrusive.
Overall this was a wonderful dining experience.
Pros: Excellent food, service and ambience

I hadn't been to The Red Cat in a while. In New York with all of teh openings you often forget to go back to old favorites if you happen to move away as I did. Well was in the area and lucked out on a crowded Tuesday night at 7:30pm...couldn't believe it was still so hot. The bar was always my favorite place to sit . I stiull love the vibe, our bartender was so great and the food is still amazing. My friend said her duck was the best she ever had. This is a place that feels very serious becuse the crowd tends to look more UES than Chelsea but the service is attitude free and there is a coolness about the atmosphere. I'm going back and definitely amongst the best for this hood.
Pros: Food,ambiance ,service
Cons: None

As a rule, if I have a great meal, I have dessert. About a month ago, I left The Red Cat without dessert and a little bit annoyed with their management. I hesitate to call The Red Cat bad because everyone else adores this place, so I'll call my experience there "not great."
Bottom line: our appetizers (saute of zucchini and fried oysters) were delectable; our entrees (wild striped bass and atlantic salmon) were a boring, dare I say "trite", and lacked the life that you expect a restaurant with such great praise to have.
A service note, here: our entrees sat on our table for about 10 minutes longer than they should have, even 7 or 8 minutes after someone from the wait staff walked by and said that they would be by to pick it up. When our server came by, we were a little flustered, which apparently prompted the manager to come by and say that "[she] didn't know that [we] were in a rush." Well, we weren't in a rush, but our entire table agreed that she was insinuating that it was our fault that our plates weren't removed from the table. I guess that this could happen anywhere, but it's unfortunate that it happend at this restaurant. This, coupled with the so-so entrees (maybe it was our fault too that we didn't order the right ones), was why we opted out of dessert.
Upon arrival, I loved the atmosphere, the wine list, the cocktails, and the menu, but things went down-hill after the appetizers. I really want to like this restaurant , and despite my better judgment, I am going to try it again because so many people have had wonderful experiences there.
Pros: Atmosphere, Date spot, Cozy bar, Everyone else seems to like it
Cons: So-so entrees, slow wait staff

The Red Cat is now one of my favorite places in the city. It epitomizes the atmosphere I love most: very homey and cozy, but light at the same time; casual and neighborly with a refined appeal to it; busy but not loud; very friendly staff. But the food is what really matters most here. Everything we had (three of us) was delectable--down to the Manhattan ordered by a very discerning Manhattan-drinker. We had the tartar and fried oysters to start--both amazing. My duck was delicious, and we shared the tempura green beans (SO GOOD!!) and the polenta. It really was great from beginning to end.
Pros: Food! (tempura green beans, duck, steak

Red Cat has a charming, rustic decor with an urbane menu. The appetizers were creative and interesting - the lobster with potato chips was a particularly fun and tasty combination of haute food with junk food - and the extensive wine list is stocked with solid, reasonably priced bottles. The entrees we tried (skate, trout, liver, and duck) were well-executed, but not terribly inventive as far as flavor combinations went. Service is friendly and attentive without being overbearing. Plus, we stopped by on a Saturday evening without a reservation, and were able to get seats right away. It's nice to have a place where you can go and count on being seated quickly, getting good service, and getting a satisfying - though not necessarily revelatory - meal.
