Haru is a stand out in a neighborhood filled with decent but not outstanding sushi restaurants. A stylish room, and high quality fish every day they're a reliable place to get high quality sushi that is always the right taste, texture and color. They are a bit pricer than most of the other places in the area, and if you're not really knowlegable about sushi, you might noti notice the increased quality you're getting for the price.

Haru is a great mid week spot to nip your sushi cravings in the bud. Grab a date or a pal and sidle up to the bar for a fun and low key evening.
Arrive early and don't try to walk in on weekends. The Upper East Siders like their raw fish and they aren't afraid to throw and elbow or two to get a good table.
The sake menu is pretty good and the staff is polite. Try some of the salads as a starter and be sure to let the chef tempt you into a daily special.

When I eat here, I feel like I'm buying into a lifestyle concept, like I'm eating at the J. Crew of sushi. It's good, but I'm paying more for the idea of eating sushi at Haru, rather than eating good sushi. The preparation and quality of the sushi is good, but nothing different than my favorite sushi joint, which is considerably better priced. I find them to be quite expensive for their cuts and portions of the rolls. This is not Nobu we're talking about.
So I wonder what the buzz is about for Haru, given I pass by constant lines waiting for a table outside. I suppose it has to do with being the first "restaurant", rather than a sushi "joint", to come to the area, hence the ever-lasting perception that this is the place to go for sushi. I disagree with the idea that it's a romantic restaurant, because it's not. Although the decor is very nice, it doesn't excuse the fact that you're shoulder to shoulder with your neighbors, and people watch you like vultures for your table to be ready upon your last bite.

Haru is a great restaurant. The food is amazing, although the prices can a bit much. The tartar is probably the best I've had at any Japanese restaurant. It's very smooth and flavorful. Sushi is very fresh and decor is nice as well. The location on the upper east side has a trendy/romantic feel. This would be a great place to bring a date!

Haru is a very modern stylish Japanese restaurant. There are many Japanese restaurants in the area but I always come back to Haru for their delicious sushi and sashimi. The wait staff is very attentive and they also have a nice bar for those non sake drinkers out there. Try the chef's specials and let him choose the sushi for you. It will be a treat.

Yes, the prices are online with how good the food is. Definitely. But who cares when the food is this delicious? I have been twice and I also recommend it to my friends. I adore the service, it's perfect. Not hovering, not standoffish. The decor could have gone wrong, like in other plces, but in here they took it down and made it simple, just like I like it.

I went here for my birthday, and had made previous reservations. We were seated immeadiately wich was a plus, but after sitting down the waiter didn't come over for a good 20 minutes. The decorations we're very sleak, and I loved the color palete. When it comes down to the food, nothing to amazing. There are a billion amazing japanese restaraunts in NYC, I don't think this one should be on the list. It isn't so much trendy but that what it comes off to me as. I had the duck, and it was greasy and the sauce was way to salty. I wouldn't go back there for the food, but maybe for a drink.

Forget Benihana's and theatrical chefs. Come to Haru, a small Japanese restaurant on the Upper East Side for a delightful repast of well prepared Japanese food & very fresh seafood. Beautiful presentation on nice Japanese dishes adds to the enjoyment of partaking a meal here. Always highly rated on Zagat. The restaurant is a little small and can get crowded and noisy at times so try to go a little earlier - they open at 5 except on Sundays when they open at 4:30PM. Service as well as the food is excellent! Highly recommended.
