When we're in the mood for a great (and we do mean great) burger and all the fixings, the Barking Dog is where we go. Easily the best burger, served on toasted rosemary Focaccia bread and accompanied by a heavenly slaw. Choosing between the spicy curly fries and the beer-battered onion rings is too painful so we get an order of each and share.
On those rare occasions when we can bear to order something else, shepherd's pie is delicious and hearty. Regardless of the entree choice, a cobb salad is a requirement as it's hands-down the best in the city. So good, in fact, that we sometimes order it just to take it home. Portions for everything, including salads, are huge so plan on a doggy bag - no pun intended :)
Prices are not dirt cheap here but become more reasonable when you see that each order can feed two. In addition, not much can be said for the atmosphere although it does have a neighborhood feel. Seating by the windows is pleasant but not terribly comfortable on what are, essentially, glorified folding chairs. The inside of the restaurant offers a few comfy booths but it's dark and a bit dreary. But, this is not romantic dining. This is a (hopefully) rare treat of grease, saturated fat and cholesterol good enough to make you lick your fingers!

We were initially drawn to The Barking Dog's ambience, French cafe interior, trendy cafe window seating, and who doesn't love all those dogs? It has a lot of everything for any taste. The breakfast is hearty, traditional, and creative. Today, I had spinach-potato-dill pancakes & poached eggs with salmon caviar and creme fraiche - for under $10. My friend had a delicious friend calamari appetizer that was enough for 2 with a gorgeous salad, and the kids love the burgers on focaccia bread. No matter what your mood or craving, The Barking Dog satisfies - enjoy!
Pros: Food, Ambience, Service, Price
Cons: None

I live above the Barking Dog and have had rodent problems for the last year - so I wouldn't trust the cleanliness of this place.
Pros: Good pancakes

Awful delivery service. Took 90mins to deliver 1 omelette 4 blocks. Phone service is useless. DO NOT ORDER HERE - there is so much choice in Manhattan that it's not worth it.

The service at this place was pathetic. Waited forever to get a simple glass of water and a menu. Finally got a waitress, who forgot our drinks three times after asking, then had to come back to confirm our lunch order after screwing up the table's behind us. The place only had four people in it and it was a Tuesday at 2pm. I would hate to imagine what a Saturday is like at this place! Do not go here if you place any value on time and/or customer respect.
Pros: none
Cons: worst service ever

Happily decorated with photos of canines and related paraphenalia, The Barking Dog is a nice eatery for breakfast. The buttermilk biscuits are fresh and delicious, serving size is ample. You pay extra for coffee, juice or soda but the service is friendly and very good and the food is excellent! Take advantage of the breakfast special. Highly recommended!

The barking dog is one of the coolest places that I have visited or gone to in the upper east side of manhattan. It offers a wide selection of food and has a nice breakfast menu as well. Notable is the southern fried chicken, meat loaf, and wide array of sandwiches. Also note that they have an awesome breakfast special for only five dollars, and it runs through until the afternoon. So if you are in the upper east side, why not check out this nice restaurant, you will not be sorry.
