French Roast is a great continental-style bistro on the Upper West Side. They are open 24-hours and have charming decor (note the pressed-tin ceilings). They have serve breakfast, lunch, weekend brunch, dinner and over-night menus. They also have a full bar, and great coffee/ espresso. This place is a particularly popular spot to end up after an evening of bar hopping. The lunches are also quite good, and reasonable priced. Dinner prices range from $12-30 for entrées. The french onion soup is excellent, as are desserts. In nice weather there is also outdoor cafe seating which is perfect for people watching. You'll enjoy being a part of the eclectic crowd that eats at the French Roast.

A group of friends and I stopped in here after a concert at Symphony Space and had a lovely dinner. It took a bit of time to be seated, but we were fine (if a bit cramped) at the bar. I loved my meal - onion soup & the raclette plate. I chose to have hot chocolate for dessert (I couldn't resist the big bowl with whipped cream on top). A great meal for a reasonable price. Good wine/cocktail list and quick service earn it 4 stars.

I think this place never closes, which is good because it's nice to be able to stop in for a snack or a meal or coffee. Everything I've ever had there is good. It's a nice laid-back atmostphere where you are able to relax and enjoy your beverage. Even if it's crowded, you don't feel rushed to finish your meal and leave.

An excellent place for a morning cup of coffee or a late night meal, French Roast has found a corner (literally) for itself on the Upper West Side. While sometimes overcrowded, especially outside in the summer and inside in the winter when it is usually too loud for conversation, it nevertheless offers a simple yet tasty menu. Calling it French Cuisine might be a little unfair as it is more a French-American joint (highly recommend the brie burger). Wine selection could use some improvement but I have heard of people bringing their own bottles for a corking fee. If you really want to experience the restaurant, however, don't go at peak hours. It is usually packed and not with quiet upper west siders. Go first thing in the morning or at 3am if that happens to be where you find yourself after a busy night. It usually only closes for an hour or two for cleaning but even then, the friendly wait staff has allowed me a warm seat when in need of a place to read and start/end the day. The Warm Chocolate Cake is a way to end any meal.
