I've tried other yoga studios before, specifically laughing lotus and yoga to the people-- but no where else do I feel so warmly greeted and regarded. I think of yoga-works as a family-- I have been attending class there for about 5 years now. When I found out the studio had a presence on city search I felt mandated to contribute...there is literally not enough I can say about the people at yoga-works... you just have to try for yourself.
check on the 2 weeks for $30 deal. also, the downtown studio (138 5th avenue) has an AMAZING space.
google yogaworks for full detail, schedules etc.
Pros: easy to access and approachable staff
Cons: none!

I've checked out classes at Om, Jivamukti, The Shala, Laughing Lotus and Integral Yoga. Out of all of these places, I think Yoga Works is the best. Their classes are challenging, but at the same time teachers are really good about explaining technique. When I take classes at other places in the area, I find that they rush through and the technique is terrible - which is not as effective out and may even result in injury. A lot of the teachers are very experienced and learned at Yoga Works in CA (where it's the top school). You'll find out pretty quickly which teachers are best. The downside is that they only have 2 classrooms. They don't offer as many classes as some of the bigger schools. Evening and weekend classes can be crowded and they don't have good changing rooms. The unlimited monthly rate is a great deal, but even if it were more, I don't think I would go anywhere else.

At the beginning of last summer, I found one of those 2 weeks for $30 postcards lying around on Columbia's campus and I decided to try out yoga....and its been great. I spent the summer (almost every day...I was studying for a big standardized test) at Yogaworks westside. Since then, I've tried a couple other studios (Yoga to the People and Life in Motion) and Yoga works is BY FAR the best. I've found the teachers I love and their instruction is FAR BETTER than at either of the other two studios I've tried out, especially for a beginner like myself.
As for more experienced yogis, I can't promise anything. But I have a friend who has been practicing daily for a couple of years, and she agrees that the Yogaworks has the best instruction - the teachers demonstrate all the poses narrate what to do very clearly. Its amazing how the littlest instructions - "try to roll your inner upper thighs towards the ceiling" or "push your back leg towards the back of the room to engage the whole leg" can make the poses more enjoyable, deeper, and more stable. In yogaworks classes, these sorts of instructions are constant and make for a great yoga practice.
People often say they don't like Yogaworks' "corporate" atmosphere, but that's something that I hadn't even thought of till someone said it to me. If you go to the same classes every week, you will know the teachers and they will know you, as if the studio is a "neighborhood'" and "family owned" (non-corporate) kind of place. The studios are beautiful, and yes, maybe the decor of all the studios are just about the same, but that design is really pleasant and calming. And there's enough space so you are not directly on top of your neighbor (like yoga to the people) and the studios aren't so poorly designed that you might get a spot on the floor where a bright light will be shining in your eyes for your entire class (like life in motion).
Please try out Yogaworks for 2 weeks....really....its worth it.
Pros: great, detailed instruction
Cons: I wish they offered classes that started a bit later than 7:30PM (that's the latest time).

This is a popular skating rink in New York City. Probably one of the best, if not already the best. Skaters pay a flat fee to get in and they can skate all day. The center of the rink is reserved for professional skaters who want to practice tricks.
When there are large crowds, the rink gets re-iced a lot more often. That's not good because it takes up a lot of time to do. So although this is a good rink, the crowd really can be a hassel sometimes.
During the summer this place is turned into a tiny carnival type place. They have small rides and games, all for kids though.

The place has had too many names in the past few years but the same staff has worked there the entire time and the majority of them know what they are talking about. I don't do much there besides have film developed but they have a small camera sales department and sell a good deal of photo frames. Most of my experiences have been good. They have a longer turn around time than your one hour photo place (no surprise) but the quality is noticeably better. I don't personally like that they crop your photos to size for you but that is only a concern if you are getting prints. I don't like how they blow up Black and White negatives to print, I have gotten back some with very ugly hints of green in them that I refused to pay for. The main factor is the price. They are better than the random consumer quality developing shop so they charge more. I'd recommend purchasing the 15 dollar 1 year membership which gives you 10% off on all film purchases and developments if you intend on becoming a regular.

The Whitney is a great place to spend the afternoon - I could sit and watch the Alexander Calder circus video for hours. I've enjoyed many special exhibits there on subjects ranging from film projects to quilting bees. The permanent collection is definitely worth a look but may not pull you back more than once a year.
Sarabeth's in the basement is a fantastic spot for brunch or lunch! Get the hot chocolate. (Note - it is open before the museum is on weekends)

I went to this place for a bachelor party recently. We got trained on rifle and range safety, learned how to use the sights, load the magazines, and then were shooting within 15 minutes. We fired a .22 ruger rifle - which is about as small as a rifle gets but it's still a thrill. Gunpowder and shots being firing gets the adrenaline pumping. I thought the staff was well trained, very helpful, and relaxed. The range itself is a small place, but surprisingly comfortable. I think there are 12 stations, and the depth of the range looked to be about 50 feet. The range is divided into two equal halves, the left half seemed to be for the amateurs & civilians, while the professionals, like cops, used the right.
The range is well managed and safe. I am recommending this place to anyone who's interested in learning how to shoot, or for those vets who just want to see if their aim is still sharp. Another note worth mentioning: This isn't just a manly-man's sport, two young cute ladies joined our group and shot with us. They had never shot before and had just a good a time as we did. In fact they shot better than some of the guys.

Watabe is not your average sporting goods store. It definately doesnt have the size and breadth of products that a Modells or Kleins has, but they do have a great staff and a wide selection of goods not always found at the big stores. It doesnt have a small town feel per se, but more of a specialty store. I like them and shop there often, even though prices are a bit high.
