This museum's in a good neighborhood unlike those other museums way uptown where you don't like to walk at night. Anyways, I was a little unfamiliar with the art I'd see here before I visited. It's very asian-themed but not like manga or anime. There were some really cool paintings here. I'd definitely recommend it for someone who's sick of going to the Met or MOMA.

The Rubin Museum of Art, New York's newest museum, is dedicated to the art of the Himalayas and regions surrounding them. Housed in what used to be Barneys, that quintessential emporium of rampant, albeit hip, consumerism, there's some irony here, what with Buddhism encouraging the renouncing of such trappings. But that irony is just one of the pleasures of this museum. It's collection of paintings, textiles, sculpture and ritual objects are displayed in a space that is, itself, a work of art. In line with it's desire to educate, the museum produces pulic programs that include film presentations, music, theater and dance performances as well as lectures and workshops. Guided tours of exhibitions are also available.

The Rubin Museum opened in fall 2004 and is a beautiful renovation of the old Barney's space. Featuring art from the Himalayas, Rubin has a great sense of space and majesty. They have an amazing collection of deities and buddhas from Nepal, Tibet and other parts of Asia. Their gallery space spans five floors and they have new exhibits opening all the time. A current exhibit of female buddhas explores images of the feminine divine in eastern culture, including Hinduism and Buddhism. The museum offers educational programs and events that help inform the public about this area of art that is often left out of mainstream museums and galleries. They also have a lovely ground floor cafe. This is a great space to have a special event for your business or nonprofit.
