The Met is truly a must see for anyone visiting New York City.
The Monet collection and the Egyptian exhibit are not to be missed. One could easily spend more than two days at the Met - the building is huge. Do not allocate less than a day for it - there is just so much to see. The admission fee is just the amount they suggest. You can pay what you want to get in.

It's a steep entry fee but it's for a good cause. Don't worry about all the tourists - real New Yorkers should go to.

the MET is perfect for taking a day to stroll through, see some of the world's greatest art.
my favorite is the large Egyptian temple room. it's worth the trip by itself.

Even if you don't like art you can find something here interesting. There's just so many things in the permanent collection and visiting exhibits. This may also be the biggest bargain in museums, the recommended contribution is not enforced as with other places, so you can pay as little as a penny and still get through the door. However, there's always throngs of people in your way when looking at stuff, and it's a little trek from the subway station.

I am not sure how this store compares to the one in the actual museum, since I have not been to the shop in the museum, but this one has some pretty nice stuff. It is located by Rockefeller Center, so it is not surprising that the store is a bit on the pricey side. They do have some pretty unique gifts though.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art, also commonly referred to as the Met, is a great place for those interested in art. It is also a good place to visit to broaden your horizons a bit. You can find all different types of art, from cubism to pointillism to abstract. If you are looking for a place to take your kids for a few hours, this would be a good choice. They will learn and become more cultured individuals.

Next time you're stumped for a gift, try the Met Gift shop. I guess you can't call the posters, art books, mugs, jewelry, serving dishes and toys "originial" since most of them are based on art on display in the museum, but a lot of the pieces for sale certainly are unique.
I'm a big fan of the educational children's books and toys - gladiator action figures and monet coloring books beat Teletubies hands down.
Admittedly, some of the stuff in the shop is a little tacky, but that's also part of the charm. Someone in your life is bound to get a kick out of a Van Gogh inspired umbrella.
If you get the timing right there are some really great deals to be had - I just caught a 50% off sale on a whole bunch of reproduction vases, tea-pots, etc.
